Modding in Skyrim SE should be more easy, now Bethesda has also added support for Console Mods.

The new 64 bit engine should make the game more stable. But some mistakes from the reference game are still there.

So, to start the mod mania, there are a few essentials you should always grab.

1. USSEP The community patch

Image

2. Brumbeks SMIM to make all objects more appealing and fix some nasty graphics glitches.

Than there are a lot of mods that improve game play, characters and a lot more.

Here a top 5 for now:

1. Ordinator (Perk Tree Overhaul)
Makes the game a lot more fun to play with some more useful perks and some crazy ones as well.

2. Wet and Cold
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/644/?

3. Ars Metallica
Greatly improves smithing. Melt down stuff to create armors etc.
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/321/?

4. Immersive Citizens Overhaul
Makes the daily activities of NPC more interesting.
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/173/?

5. The Paarthurnax Dilemma
Removes the need to kill the master of the voice on top of the Throat of the World to become full member of the Blades.
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/365/?

And then there are the "run for your lives" and "when vampires attack mods" that will save citizens, so the game does not turn into a ghost town quickly. Always found it ridiculous that a lady in a dress with only a dagger attacks a Dragon :D
Things like that will be fixed with these mods. People will take cover or gather at the inns during attacks.

There are also a lot of options to improve the looks of characters in the game. That is more of personal taste.

I'm still modding the game and have not played it yet

I will most likely start the game without very heavy weather modding.
But a good weather mod is Vivid Weathers.

With some effort you can transfer Bijin wives, warmaidens and NPC to the SE version. There is even an all in one patch to reduce the amount of .esp to just 1. Usefull when you do a lot of modding.

I have most of these installed as well, but deactivated Open Cities and Live Another Life for now.

Reason is compatibility from Open Cities. It is a part of my last few play troughs in the vanilla Skyrim and it rocks. But i also want to try a few city and house mods in my first SE playtrough.

I deactivated live another life because there is a mod that overhauls the intro and gives the option to escape with Ullfric. It also gives more depth in dialogues between Elenwen and General Tullius.
The Talmor want to keep the Civil War going as long as they can. It will weaken Skyrim and makes it an easy prey for them. You notice this during the Talmor Embassy Mission. Or from certain dialogues.

What i'm still missing is a mod that lets you unite Skyrim against the Talmor. ;)

In my second playtrough i will most likely activate Live Another Life. It rocks :2thumbsup:

I skipped on RDO on purpose. Instead of giving each character unique lines it basically unlocks all lines for characters with the same voice actor. And it adds bloatware according to some. Anneke or Lydia apologizing the way Freya does is not immersive IMO. I tried it and disabled it again in my current playtrough. Even if it did add the option to add Isran or the Snow Elf Priest as a follower. They served me well. Could not give them a horse though.

I have not picked any custom followers yet. There are lot of good ones though. A little humor is what is missing from Skyrim. The only joke is the strong man joke that gets annoying after a while.

Talking about humor, i know this is not for everybody, but there are a few mods that punish guards for mentioning arrow to the knee and Nazeem for mentioning the Cloud District. He is literally launched in the sky every time he does that and lives, as he seems to be indestructible

And i also use Holidays to mix up the daily lives, just like Immersive Citizens does. They all come out to celebrate on the market square in Whiterun for example.
Immersive Citizens makes NPC go shopping or chatting and it greatly adds to the city life.

Last but not least, you need a good follower mod. There is an evolved version of AFT.

Thanks for the suggestions I will check them out.
My list is only a place holder at the moment, once I get them all together I will cherry pick the ones I want for the play through. :D

This will then bring me to the only thing I hate about Skyrim and modding and that's getting it all to run together :angry-banghead:

I do use Nexus mod manager and Loot but it can still be a bit trial and error sometimes as even these don't get it right all the time. :(

Skyrim SE should have less issues with mods than the original skyrim. But we can only be sure by trying it

I want my favorite Breezehome mod. It is currently been converted. And maybe even upgraded as well. Author has not worked on it for over 2 years.
SE brings some old modders back to the game.

I installed Vurt's flora overhaul as well. Inlcuding LOD he made for the game. :2thumbsup:

When it comes to texture overhauls, just install or reinstall the most important ones for you last.
Only real issues can come from scripted mods or mods that change the same things.

Loot is just a tool and can be contra productive at times. But it usually makes the game stable.

The mods i'm waiting for are Helgen Reborn and CWI (College of Winterhold Improved). These have been part of all my last playthroughs in 32bit Skyrim.

Talking about magic. I think Bez already mentioned some magic mods. But i mention a couple.

I have installed Apocalypse as it is awesome. Use it now too.

Another good mage mod is Elemental Destruction Magic, which adds Earth, Water and Wind magic to the existing Fire, Ice and Electric magic. Including atronachs, cloaks, staves and spells. Water destruction is very spectacular.

I will mot likely not use any Weather mods in my first playthrough. Vivid weathers adds some fantasy weather to skyrim, but if you want to have a seriously worked over weather mod that intensifies the vanilla game and feel instead of replacing it, pick this one.

True Storms Special Edition

I especially like the option to justify volume of individual effects. 8-)

And last one i want to mention today is Acquisitive Soul Gems.
That mod makes sure you can only capture souls in their correct soul gems. No more petty souls in grand soul gems. Is a very simple but good game feature.

Do you use the Nexus mod installer for all those mods or just the ingame mods? As most of those mods isn't in the official mods selection.

I'm used to the Nexus Mod Manager. I do know there is an in game mod manager now, that removes the need for an external manager. Have not tried it yet.

There are ways to import mods from Steam to NMM for example.
I prefer to use just one manager. No interference that way.

But i have not even booted up my SE
Maybe i will do that today. That will be a vanilla storyline and game play experience.
There is a reason why i want to wait for certain mods to be released to the new engine.

I always play Skyrim on Legendary level. The few times i chose a different difficulty did not feel right.

But there was something off about it. Especially the damage you deal yourself. Default Legendary values are 25% for your own dealt damage and 300% for your opponent. This means that you have to run or sneak in the beginning of the game and avoid any serious combat untill you have levelled up enough to face them. But the dealt damage is just unrealistic. One of the reasons why i always create the most insane weapons with max Smithing skills, potions and enchantments. And even than you need to be careful in battles. Only at very high levels you become slightly overpowered, making confrontations more easy. Dangerous Dragonborn

There are many combat mods that are more like cheats. Some improve it a bit or are just focused on easthetics.

But now there is a mod that makes combat more real. It increases dealt damage just like the damage you receive from opponents. And the damage has more effect. This will greatly improve gameplay and will make combats more realistic and dangerous.

As a bonus it comes with the Brawl Bug Fix, that deals with brawls turning into real fights in Vanilla Skyrim.
