Volvo has revealed the all-new S90 premium sedan, along with some of the specs of the range, including the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variant.

As expected, Volvo’s new entry in the premium segment is based on the Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), first used by the XC90, featuring the same powertrains with the large SUV such as the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid.

The Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid will offer 394hp from combining a four-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged 318hp 2-litre petrol engine with an 80hp electric motor and a 46hp crankshaft-mounted starter generator, all of them paired with a eight-speed automatic gearbox. Power goes to all four wheels.

Volvo didn’t share yet any official fuel economy figures but it is expected to score similar numbers with the 134.5mpg UK and 49g/km of CO2 emissions of its sibling, the XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid.

Other features include the advanced semi-autonomous system, called Pilot Assist which also debuted in the XC90, keeping the car aligned within lane markings up to motorway speeds of around 130km/h (80mph).

A new City Safety feature debuts in the S90, the large animal detection, which -as the name suggests- detects large animals such as elk, horses or moose in day and night driving conditions. The new system offers an intuitive warning first and brake support to help avoid a collision.

“Our idea was to bring something entirely new to this rather conservative segment and deliver a visual expression that exudes leadership and confidence on the exterior. On the inside we have taken the S90 to the next level, delivering a high-end luxury experience that promises comfort and control,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group.

“The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

The all-new Volvo S90 will make its public debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2016.

I think that they should have connected the upper parts of the tail lights. It would look incredibly stylish, especially in the dark.

This car exudes a level of handsomeness that I don't think any luxury manufacturer has bothered with in a decade or more.

Oh yes, that's true. A lot of cars with a single bigass tail light look good when it's turned on; the Dodge Charger, the Dodge Challenger, the Lincoln MKZ, even the Porsche Carrera 4S. Image

I hope they make a Polestar version out of this. It should have 400+ hp since the S90 with the T8 engine already gets 394 hp.
RUF is better than Porsche!
