Abarth has introduced today in Geneva its hotter version of the Fiat 124 Spider along with a rally specification.
Italy’s version of the latest Mazda MX-5 Miata has received the Abarth treatment which brings a sportier exterior appearance backed by a more powerful heart and all wrapped in a lightweight package. The performance roadster comes with a two-tone black and white paint contrasted by the red accents noticeable on the side mirror caps, brake calipers, and on the front bumper.
It wears a slightly more aggressive body kit with beefier bumpers, more pronounced side skirts, and a more imposing rear end with quad exhaust tips and additional vents. The larger 17-inch wheels contribute to make the 124 Spider look meaner and come paired with Brembo brakes featuring front aluminum calipers.
Power comes from a turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir gasoline engine developing 170 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It helps the Abarth 124 Spider go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 6.8 seconds and top out at 230 kph Output is channeled to the road through either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an optional sequential transmission with paddles installed behind the steering wheel.
It comes as standard with a “Record Monza” exhaust system providing a “beautiful growling sound” and also has a mechanical limited-slip differential. Add into the mix an extremely low weight of just 1,060 kg and you get a nimble roadster that should be a joy to drive.

I think the new 124 Spyder looks better than the MX5 it is based on.
But for an Abarth the 170HP is a bit on the low side. Especially as you know that stronger versions can be found in the Abarth 500. Up to 210HP from the same 1.4 turbocharged engine. So theyre might be a kit in preparation to beef up the HP to 180-190 or more.
With RWD it can cope with that easily.
