Aston Martin-Red Bull 001’s V12 Is Going To Have A Ridiculous 11,000rpm Redline

If any car deserved to be recognized as a game-changer, it should be this: the AM-RB 001.

This is Adrian Newey’s vision for the ultimate road car and represents in a sense a modern take on the McLaren F1 recipe.

The ultimate road car needs the ultimate engine so that’s why the company plans to use a naturally aspirated bespoke V12 unit that will rev up to 11,000rpm according to Marek Reichman, Aston Martin's chief creative officer who spoke to The Drive.

“This will be an all-new V12, much smaller than the DB11 motor,” Reichman said. “It takes all of the knowledge of Formula One that Adrian has gained, not only at his current employer, but at Williams and McLaren as well. We may be saying farewell to this kind of powertrain, so we plan to produce the best of the species.”

The relatively simple shape of the 001 hides perhaps the most advanced aero agenda seen on a road car, set to give the 001 the performance of an LMP1 car. The occupants will sit with their feet above their hip point, copying the driving position of an F1 or an LMP car.

This is going to be huge when it will finally arrives on the road in 2018, with 99 road-legal units and 24 track-only cars scheduled for production. We simply can’t wait.

Aston Martin has confirmed that the AM-RB 001 hypercar will use a naturally-aspirated 6.5-liter V12 developed by Cosworth.

One of the industry's most well-regarded engine builders, Cosworth has a rich history in motorsport and should prove the perfect company to develop an engine potent enough to make the AM-RB 001 faster than a Formula One car.

It is estimated that this high-revving engine will produce a remarkable 900 hp without the use of any kind of forced induction. Additional power will come from an F1-style energy recovery system that collects energy produced under braking and then stored in batteries from Rimac.

A number of other familiar names will play a pivotal part in bringing the hypercar to life. They will include Ricardo which will supply the seven-speed transmissions, Bosch which will develop an ECU for the AM-RB 001 and Alcon and Surface Transforms who will produce the F1-spec brake calipers and 'carbon carbon' discs.

Elsewhere, Multimatic, the same company responsible for producing the 2017 Ford GT, will construct the Aston hypercar's carbon fiber monocoque.

Speaking about the car and all the partners involved, Red Bull Racing's chief technical officer Adrian Newey said “Much like Formula One, designing, engineering and building a car like the AM-RB 001 is a massive team effort. Formerly identified by its code name, AM-RB 001, this new hypercar co-developed by Aston Martin and Red Bull will take a page out of Norse mythology.

Dubbed the Aston Martin Valkyrie, the new model also joins a famous lineage of Aston Martin 'V' cars, such as the Virage, the Vanquish, the Vantage and the Vulcan. Feel free to throw "Volante" in there as well, even though it's a body type and not a model name.

"Aston Martin model names have deep meaning. They need to inspire and excite. To tell a story and enrich a narrative that stretches back some 104-years. The Aston Martin Valkyrie is an incredibly special car that demands an equally remarkable name; an uncompromising car that leaves nothing in reserve," said AM chief creative officer, Marek Reichman.

"The connotations of power and honour, of being chosen by the Gods are so evocative, and so pertinent to a car that only a fortunate few will ever experience."

Despite its name being rooted in Norse mythology, the Aston Martin Valkyrie is nothing if not 100% modern. All in all, this hypercar was created by Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, together with AF Racing and some of the world's leading technology partners.

For those unfamiliar with Valkyries, they were meant to represent female figures who selected who lived and who died on the field of battle, taking slain warriors up to Valhalla where Odin reigned above all else.
