ADRIAN PADEANU wrote:It was only several months ago when Lotus introduced the Elise Cup 250 and now the Hethel-based marque is ready to show us a special edition which manages to slash even more weight. While the regular model tips the scales at 931 kilograms (2,053 pounds) or 10 kg (22 lbs) less with the optional carbon package, the Special Edition weighs just 899 kg (1,981 lbs).

Remaining faithful to Lotus’ ‘light is right’ motto, the limited-run model makes more extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum to achieve the strict diet. As standard, the Elise Cup 250 Special Edition comes with carbon fiber front splitter, front access panel, rear wing, and tailgate, while the body can be painted in one of the four colors available (Classic Blue, Yellow, Red or White metallic).

The special model serves as a celebration of the firm’s 50 years in Norfolk and uses the familiar Toyota-derived supercharged 1.8-liter engine with 243 horsepower (181 kilowatts) and 184 pound-feet (250 Newton-meters) of torque. Output is delivered to the road with help from a six-speed manual transmission featuring sportier ratios to enable a livelier ride. Lotus will also throw in an electronic differential lock which improves traction and enables quicker exit speeds during intense cornering.

In terms of performance, the ultra-lightweight sports car needs just 3.9 seconds to cover the 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) run and 4.3 seconds for the 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) sprint before topping out at 154 mph (248 kph).

If you can’t live without amenities such as air conditioning, cruise control, floor mats, and a carbon fiber hard top, you can have these goodies at an additional cost. However, keep in mind these will all increase the car’s weight, as will the infotainment system (with iPod & Bluetooth connectivity), full carpet, and auxiliary driving lights. Lotus also has 16-inch front & 17-inch rear black ultra-lightweight forged alloy wheels to offer, along with a black pack which brings a matte black finish for the mirror caps, diffuser, and some of the other body parts.

You will have to hurry to get one taking into account Lotus is making only 50 units and will sell them on a first-come, first-served basis. In U.K., it carries a price tag of £47,900, while in Germany you can get it for €64,000. French customers will have to fork out €64,540 and in Italy it’s significantly more expensive, at €67,980. Lastly, Lotus Japan wants 9.4 million yet for the Elise 250 Special Edition.
