JAKE HOLMES wrote:It’s finally here. Ahead of the start of the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Dieter Zetsche, revealed the new Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar, and it’s just as impressive as expected. The stats you care about: Zero to 200 kilometers per hour (124 mph) in under six seconds. A top speed above 217 mph (350 km/h). More than 1,000 horsepower. And, to top it off, up to 16 miles (25 kilometers) of all-electric driving range.

“This vehicle will make all previous performance limits at AMG and Mercedes look small,” Zetsche said, adding that it will be “the most efficient” hypercar of its kind.

Although we had, of course, seen its basic shape in various teaser photos, and learned much already about its powertrain, this is our first official look at the Project One from top to bottom. It’s a stunning, aerodynamic shaped design that hugs the road. The entire body is a carbon-fiber monocoque, Note front fenders that rise above the wheels, a dramatically sculpted tail with ultra-wide taillights, and a roof scoop to feed the rear-mounted 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine – yes, which is derived from Mercedes’ F1 engines and can rev to 11,000 rpm. To achieve such lofty speeds without valve float, there are pneumatic valve controls rather than traditional valve springs. It’s fed by an electric turbocharger and, Mercedes says, has more than 40 percent thermal efficiency, an impressive figure. Another electric motor is linked to the engine for additional hybrid boost. Total output to the rear wheels is “over” 671 hp (500 kw).

The engine is supplemented by two more electric motors, one for each front wheel; they are rated for 120 kilowatts (161 hp) each and can spin up to 50,000 rpm. Power is stored in lithium-ion batteries, and Zetsche says that up to 80 percent of braking energy can be recuperated from the front wheels to the batteries. The batteries alone weigh about 220 pounds (100 kg), and in fact, there are four times more cells than in the Mercedes F1 W06 Hybrid racing car. The electrical system also runs at 800 volts, which Mercedes says is double the usual voltage of its plug-in cars.

Production volumes, as expected for an extreme hypercar like the Project One, will be extremely limited: just 275 copies at €2.275 million (that's about $2.27 million) apiece. In fact, we've even heard the car is already sold out.

“This means that we will have to make some car lovers sad, whereas some, few, will burst with happiness I believe,” Zetsche said.

As to the chassis, motorsports-style inboard, pushrod suspension coilovers suspend the wheels, and the 8-speed automated-manual transaxle is a stressed member to which the rear suspension is attached. The front wheels are 19 inches in diameter and 10 inches wide, while the rears are 20x12 inches; both wear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard. The transmission is brand-new for the Project One and can either be used in automatic mode or via paddle shifters.

Inside, the function-first cabin features a Formula 1-inspired steering wheel, a large color display that serves as the instrument cluster, and a secondary display perched atop the center stack. There’s no much else inside the cabin: The two seats are relatively spartan, though Mercedes notes that the car’s pedals and steering wheel are adjustable for different drivers to fit comfortably.

The Mercedes-AMG Project One is, then, everything we expected: A high-tech push at the limits of road-car technology that quite literally brings F1 performance to the streets. Take a closer look at the Project One in the gallery below.

100% agree, all the other Merc's besides the AMG GTR are fugly.

Btw i Salomondrin said a few videos back he was one of the few select few who got a slot for it, but time will tell if he gets it, but he is such a Mercedes fan boy that they kind of have to give it to him.

I never thought of this, but Parker is right about this, Mercedes is really trolling McLaren with this Project One car.

Car manufacture drama

Worthy CLK-GTR successor. But how does it sound? Current F1 engines are not the most exciting in that regard.
11.000rpm. Engine change every 1.000km?

Interior looks better than the Newey-Aston Martin project.

Only the badge shows that it is a Mercedes. But it is more an AMG Supercer than anything else.

Now we need some comparison tests. Against the "older" trio Porsche 918, McLaren P1 and LaFerrari. But also against new hypercars from Koenigsegg, Bugatti and Aston Martin.

MICHAEL KARKAFIRIS wrote:After a long period of teasing and playing with shadows, the new Mercedes AMG Project One finally made its world debut as the world’s first road legal car with a Formula 1 powertrain.

Power comes from a reworked version of the hybrid system found in the W08 F1 car, including the turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine and no less than four electric motors.

The two front electric motors are state-of-the-art units, being capable of revving up to 50,000rpm when the current best motors in the market rev up to 20,000rpm. The third electric motor is integrated into the turbocharger while the fourth one is mounted directly on the combustion engine.

Each one of the front motors are producing 160hp (120kW), with the electric motor on the engine making the same amount of power and the one mounted on the turbocharger being a 120hp (90kW) unit. Total power output is "over 1000hp".

Mercedes AMG claims that turbo lag isn’t just eliminated with this setup but the response times are now even shorter than those of a naturally aspirated V8. All this was possible not just because of the torque-fill provided by the electric motors but also thanks to the electrically-assisted turbocharger which in turn features exhaust gas and compressor turbines that are separate from each other and mounted at an optimum position to the exhaust side and the intake side of the V6 unit, and connected to one another by a shaft powered by the 90kW unit.

Just in case you haven’t realized it yet, this isn’t your normal boosted hybrid powertrain, this is some next level engineering that finds its way on public roads for the first time. But what does that mean for the acceleration figures? Mercedes AMG says that the Project One is capable of exceeding 217mph (350km/h) flat out but we already knew that. What we didn’t know is that the Project One is capable of a 0-124mph (200km/h) in less than six seconds. That’s right, six.

Other things we’ve learned include a 15.5-mile all-electric range, a drive system that operates with 800 volts instead of the usual 400, a variable all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring and a sizeable lithium-ion battery pack that uses the same cells, arrangement and cell cooling system with -you guessed it- the Mercedes-AMG F1 car. The company also says that under normal driving conditions, the system recuperates up to 80 percent of the energy needed, which is then fed back to the battery.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via an all-new automated eight-speed manual transmission developed specifically for the Project One. The gearbox is activated hydraulically and offers both auto and manual modes, with the latter operated via paddles unsurprisingly. A high-strength carbon-fiber monocoque body forms the basis for the car, with the integrated engine and transmission also having load-bearing functions, as both completely support the rear suspension.

The interior gets a pair of 10-inch high-definition displays while the steering wheel with the flattened upper and lower sections hosts the controls for driving modes and suspension setup, the LED shift display and an airbag. There’s also air-conditioning, power windows and a rear-view camera, since there’s no back window.

Mercedes AMG will make only 275 examples of the Project One in left-hand drive only configuration for a price of 2.27 million each ($2.7 million in current exchange rates). All build slots are sold-out at the moment but don’t expect to see the Project One on the streets anytime soon as the company has still 18 months of development ahead of delivering the first production examples.
