RE Amemiya GReddy VI-AZ1 '96
RE Amemiya GReddy VI-AZ1 '96.jpg
In 1996, renowned tuning company and rotary specialist, RE Amemiya produced an one off alternative Autozam AZ-1 for the Tokyo Auto Salon, called the GReddy VI-AZ1 (named after its long-term partner, the sixth incarnation of their partnership project car), it was influenced by the Autozam AZ-550 Type-C but longer and wider, incorporating a 20B three rotor Wankel engine, mounted longitudinally. The only part of the car that has traces of the original AZ-1 is the gullwing door. The car uses suspension parts produced by Bilstein that can be found in a Porsche 962 and the brakes from a Ferrari F40.

The car was rebuilt again in 2000 with the car now resprayed to white, also a wing replacing the ducktail spoiler of the original, also replaced was the tire with a slightly wider version, brakes are replaced by those from a Ferrari F50. The car have since then been sold on to a private owner in Japan.

Volga V8 Roadster '06
Image

This 60's design inspired roadster is actually a BMW 650i Cabriolet based car. And note that this is not the first time that Volga has attempted and act like this. Back in 2001, the Russians produced the Volga V12 Coupe which was entirely based on the BMW 850CSi Coupe.

Like the Coupe V12, the V8 Roadster was made to honour a classic model of Gaz, the unknown to the west, Gaz-21 Volga, although that car was just a humble everyday vehicle. Under the hood you find a BMW 650i's 368 Hp 4,8 litre V8 engine, unfortunately there aren't any specs available.

Vintech P550 '13
Vintech P550 '13.jpg
Vintech is clear in making this into a tribute car and not a replica car, as you can tell that this is not quite identical to the original 550-01 that it is based on. The first major difference is that the P500’s headlights rack rearward slightly, where the 550-01’s circular headlights are straight up and down. The large, smooth hood on the P550 is secured by a modern latching system, whereas the 550-01 used a leather strap system to secure its hood.

Being from the early-1950s, the 550-01 did not have any side-view mirrors, but the P550 uses dual side-view mirrors, keeping it legal with all of the new safety laws. A huge difference on the P550 car is that the doors are gull-wing style and the 550-01 does not have this cool feature. Just behind the doors, you get a large air intake duct, whereas the 550-01 had just a louver system.

The rims on the P550 tribute are an obvious attempt to pay homage to the original model’s steel rims, but they feature a more modern curvature to them.

The back end of the P550 model boasts a single taillight assembly, unlike the 550’s dual taillight system. In addition, to add to its more modern feel, Vintech fitted the P550 with a set of bumper-exiting dual exhaust pipes, as opposed to the center-exit, under-bumper exhaust exit on the 550-01.

Another head nod to the original 550-01 is that Vintech fitted a set of engine cooling louvers on the rear of the car, just like the original 550-01.

Staying true to the original, Vintech made sure that the P550 was extremely lightweight. Its carbon fiber body weighs in at only 550 kg. That is the exact same curb weight that the original 550-01 boasted. Now that is an incredible feat.

There is very little information given about the interior of the Vintech P550. We know that it has a triple-gauge dashboard and the dashboard is gray. Other than that, your guess is as good as ours.

This is where Vintech really eliminated the P550’s connection to the Porsche 550. Vintech fitted this car with a 3.0-liter, 4-cylinder boxer powerplant that pumps out about 270 horsepower. This links up to a 5-speed manual transmission that ships power to the rear wheels. The 550-01 boasted a 1.488-liter, 4-cylinder engine that pumped out just 78 horsepower through a 4-speed manual transmission.

We say it’s safe to assume that the Vintech P550 is a screamer that likely hits 100 km/h in the 4-second range.

Kawasaki Factory Auto Racing Car '72
Kawasaki Factory Auto Racing Car '72.jpg
Kawasaki makes powersports products, … motorcycles, personal watercraft, ATVs, they make small engines and power products, industrial equipment, too, … but when did they ever build a race car?

Kawasaki’s small engine division was doing alright making engines for Arctic Cat snowmobiles, which were being successfully raced, but they wanted to expand further. In 1972, as a way to gain positive exposure for their engines, while generating a bit of new demand, they came up with the idea of using these engines in a race car for a whole new special race series, sort of a summer continuation of the winter snowmobile racing. Darrel hired a racer and car builder by the name of Harvey Aschenbrenner to build a car using Kawasaki’s 440cc two stroke two cylinder snowmobile engine.

The design concept they had in mind was along the lines of a mini version of the Can Am racers which were very popular in those years. There was a snowmobile show coming up in just over 3 months and they wanted a show car, using the engine, ready for display. When Harvey was told what they wanted, he sketched a “blueprint” on the back of a time card, showed Darrel the sketch and got an immediate go ahead.

Harvey built the car the old fashioned (pre computer) way. You made a sketch, roughed out the measurements, got some metal and went to work. He built an aluminum monocoque tub with square tubing for the sub frames. He preferred round tubing but square was what he was told to use so square it was. The aluminum sheeting was bent over the edge of the workbench. A small machine shop down the street made hubs and spindles while the local salvage yard sourced the rack and pinion steering and other minor parts. Harvey then built wooden bulkheads and constructed the foam plug for the fiberglass body which was laid up and finished by a local fiberglass company.

Though Kawasaki had both a 3 cylinder 650cc engine and a 4 cylinder 800cc engine at the time, they wanted to use the 440cc racing engine. The transmission they had available was from an early motorcycle so Harvey came up with a way of adapting it to the engine and also figured out a gear ratio to take into account the 13 inch wheels with Firestone tires being used on the car. It was quite a guessing game since the bike contributing the transmission had taller wheels plus a four stroke engine with power starting down low while the car was a two stroke, power beginning up around 8000 rpm.

After the snowmobile show that weekend, where the racer generated a lot of interest, they removed the transmission and replaced it with an axle clutch that would engage at 7000rpm trying to compensate for the badly misgeared original drive system. After a bit of tinkering and practice laps, Harvey clocked a lap of 14.56 seconds on the third mile oval against a track record of 14.54. Not bad at all!

They went back to the shop where Harvey tore the drivetrain down to install a torque converter to fix their power problems once and for all but just after everything was completely disassembled, Kawasaki told him he had to have the car at Laguna Seca for a demo run during the upcoming motorcycle races in two weeks. It was a five day drive from Minneapolis so they had just one week to build and test a new drive system and construct a trailer and paint it. It turns out, there wasn't time to test.

The demo didn't go well. Firing up the engine they immediately blew a piston and had a replacement flown in for the next day. They got the engine running but the new drive system had not been set up at all and after two 50 mph laps they trailered the car and went home. Harvey felt the day had been a complete disaster.

Harvey and Darrel decided to build more of the cars so Harvey began building more chassis parts. They prepared to move ahead with a partner who promised to machine a number of castings while Harvey went to Florida for some engine testing, but when Harvey returned six weeks later, nothing had been done. At the same time, Kawasaki had more projects in the works and Darrel, who was moving to California asked Harvey to move out too, which he did. The race car project was left hanging and in the hands of the partner, and, though there were a few attempts to revive it, never quite got back in gear after a very promising start.

Harvey lost track of that original prototype and Kawasaki’s official factory auto racing effort faded into history.

Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint 6C '82 Image The Alfasud Sprint 6C was developed in 1982 as a planned entry for Alfa Romeo into the Group B rally championship, but ultimately, the 2.5 litre GTV-6 engined 6C never had its day, since Group B rally cars were stopped due to their extreme speed and danger. Ultimately, only one Sprint 6C was made - the prototype version above... but that doesn't mean that we can't get our hands on it on a video game.
