Nissan MID4 '85
Nissan MID4 '85.jpg
In the 80’s, the still new supercar movement came directly from racing with cars like the Porsche’s 959 and Ferrari’s F40 capturing the public’s imagination. While Europe was rolling out high dollar concepts with striking designs, Japan was readying it’s own standard bearers. In taking cues from the electronics industry, car companies presented a long list of technical acronyms that seemed more Gundam inspired than by the racetracks of the Japanese or European circuit. Nissan, long known for it’s modest sporty cars, would change the face of Japanese performance car engineering with a high-tech rolling laboratory called the MID4 (Mid-Engine Four Wheel Drive). The MID4 contained many of the evolving technologies of the 80’s. They were all neatly showcased in one concept/prototype that would find their way into future Nissans.

Although the MID4 appeared to most as a concept car, it was influential working and evolving test bed for Nissan. The first car, shown at the 1985 Frankfort Motor Show combined styling cues from the Ferrari Testarossa and the Lotus Esprit with Nissan’s own. In pearl white, the look was not as attractive or aggressive as its influences and managed to look almost reserved, in much the same way the Honda NSX of a few years later. Another prototype was built-in red, looking more like a direct competitor to Ferrari.

The MID4 was an all-out sports car, but used a DOHC version of the single camed V6 engine found in the Fairlady/300ZX. The 3.0 litre engine placed just behind the passenger compartment produced 245 hp. An all-wheel drive system, developed by a European company, had a 33/67 rear wheel bias, giving the MID4 all the benefits of rear wheel performance plus the added traction and control that comes with all wheels spinning. In addition to all wheels getting power, they also steered thanks to HICAS, the first use of four-wheel steering in a Nissan. The suspension was ride adjustable, fully independent double wishbone up front with a four link strut system in back. The disc breaks at each wheel was augmented by ABS.

Nissan MID4 II '88
Nissan MID4 II '88.jpg
First unveiled at the 1985 Frankfurt Autoshow, the MID4 was a concept car designed by Nissan to originally go on sale in the mid-late 1980s. Nissan had aimed the MID4 to compete with European supercars from Porsche and Ferrari. It featured a mid-engined all wheel drive layout as well as a wide array of technology and features that would eventually find their way into other Nissan production cars. The MID4 prototypes would evolve into the MID4 II.

The MID4 II was developed and shown in 1988 at the Tokyo Motor Show. It had more streamlined styling that looked production ready next to the previous concept. The new car was seen testing in the US, leading to speculation that it could be produced and exported. Styling was reminiscent of the 240SX in the rear with buttress style “C” pillars looking very Ferrari like. The refined looked could have easily slipped in at the top of the Nissan lineup or as a future Infiniti flagship. The revised look again was neither aggressive nor overtly conservative, but lacked the visual oomph of a Ferrari. Honda managed a similar trick with the NSX by making an exotic supercar seem as user-friendly as an everyday appliance. Call it Japanese modesty, but the MID4 II was more capable than it looked. Only 3 were produced, all with a five speed manual transmission and left hand drive.

Although most modest appliances can’t reach 250 km/h, the MID4 II was developed in the hope of making its many advance technologies appliance-like in their dependability and performance. The real news with the MID4 II was under the hood. Twin turbocharging had boosted the V6 to 300 hp. Nissan looked to have a real Porsche killer on its hands.

Despite having nearly every gadget on board, the MID4 II weighed just 1.224 kg. That was considerably less that the Porsche 959, a car it was compared to often. The MID4 also would have cost less than the Porsche, but Nissan still considered it too costly to produce. Even as plans were made to retire the MID4 II from the show car circuit, Nissan was said to be considering it’s next supercar, using an Infiniti sourced V8.

The MID4 project delivered a host of goodies to other Nissans. The four-wheel steering went to the Skyline, Bluebird and Cefiro while some of its looks rubbed off on the redesigned 1986 300ZX. More importantly, the performance potential of the all-wheel drive system was demonstrated in the R32 Skyline, making it Nissan’s effective supercar overnight. The MID4 proved that Nissan could mix it up with the best of them and that its future products would benefit from technology that would be as reliable as it was effective.

Aston Martin Special Series II '98
Aston Martin Special Series II '98.jpg
Following three retro Series Is, the Series II was a custom built series of cars built for the Sultan of Brunei and his brother Prince Jeffri. The first Series was a modern interpretation of the classic 1961 DB4 Zagato, and transformed the V8 Vantage V600 into a two seat supercar. As a fitting continuation, the second series kept the four seat arrangement, but fit the car with a thoroughly modern Zagato body and custom-built interior.

Most likely the body was sketched up by Zagato and executed at the Projects Group in Newport Pagnell. The design retains the classic Aston Martin grill and surrounds it with a muscular lines that make the old 1992 V8 Vantage look dated by comparison. A unique design feature was included around the front and rear taillights from which a crease line extended into the fender. This trademark Zagato cue was later included on the much more official DB7 Zagato.

The cars were built on the V600 platform which was a after market upgrade available to any Aston Martin customers. This increased the power of engine to 600 hp, upgraded the suspension and added huge brakes with AP Racing 6-piston calipers.

Only three Series II Astons were built and all went directly to Brunei. A third series was planned which would have been the most dramatic of all, but just after the bodies were made, the Sultan and his brother pulled out of the deal, and the project was scrapped.

I see this thread more like a place to look for rare and unique cars. :handgestures-thumbup:

That Nissan would have been the perfect counterpart to the NSX had it made production. Just think, an arms race between Honda and Nissan might have goaded Toyota into the fray.

Thanks, I always try to bring the most obscure and forgotten cars to the public, they deserve more attention. The MID4 showed what Nissan is capable of. Image

Aston Martin Vantage S V12 Roadster '14
Aston Martin Vantage S V12 Roadster '14.jpg
Meet Aston Martin's fastest production convertible to date: the new V12 Vantage S Roadster with a 565hp 12-cylinder engine and a top speed of 201mph or 323 km/h. The ragtop model can also complete the sprint to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, or if you prefer the metric system, 0-100km/h comes in 4.0 seconds.

The Roadster edition follows the V12 Vantage S Coupe that was launched in 2013, with which it shares its 6.0-liter V12 engine that returns 565 hp and a peak torque of 457 lb-ft at 5,750, with 376 lb-ft readily available from as low as 1,000rpm.

The naturally aspirated mill feeds the rear wheels through Aston's Sportshift III 7-speed automated manual that replaces the six-speed stick-shift found in the previous 510 hp V12 Vantage Roadster, which Aston says, was also 20kg heavier.

Along with the uprated engine, the Roadster borrows the V12 Vantage Coupe's suspension with three-stage adaptive damping (Normal, Sport & Track), carbon ceramic brake discs all round and ZF Servotronic power assisted steering.

It gets the same cosmetic revisions as the coupe, such as the bespoke front grille trimmed in carbon fiber with black or titanium silver mesh, pronounced bonnet louvres and available graphics package. The interior is upgraded with new trims, with available carbon fibre lightweight seats.
