Bertone Birusa '03
Bertone Birusa '03.jpg
The Bertone Birusa is a concept car that reinterprets a theme which is part of the company's genetic code: the most elegant, dynamic embodiment possible of the Italian sports car, an exclusive object and the source of supremely enjoyable driving. These are important features, acknowledged in the car's ironic name, derived from the adjective 'biross' which in Piedmontese dialect describes a brilliant, extremely resourceful person.

Like all Bertone's concept cars, the Birusa incorporates innovative features and technologies, which Bertone has developed with companies that are all leaders in their respective fields, and have succeeded in rendering the ideas and concepts developed by Bertone both credible and sustainable. These features include: voice controls (Loquendo) to open the doors and the double sunroof (developed with Inalfa) made of heat-resistant glass (Socar ICS) laminated with PVB film (Solutia), a Stereo Sound System (Bose), semiadaptive headlights and an infrared night-time vision system (Valeo), and a Segway (HT) stored in the boot. Like the tender of a boat that takes passengers to places inaccessible to the big boat, the Bertone Birusa's Segway is a perfect way of reaching the centre of town, or a pedestrian precinct, after you have parked the sports car.

The Bertone Birusa gives us an idea how a typical interpretation of the high performance GT car (front engine, rear drive, two seats) could evolve stylistically in the near future. In structural terms, the Bertone Birusa borrows the alluminium chassis and engineering of the BMW Z8, with a 400 hp V8 engine and 6-speed manual gearbox. This design choice is also reflected in the interpretation of certain design details that are typical of the BMW brand identity.

Italdesign Scighera '97.jpg
The Scighera is a fully working, futuristically styled concept car designed and constructed by Italdesign of Turin, Italy in 1997. The Scighera is derived from the Alfa Romeo 164, and has an all aluminium body and frame structure is made of aluminium-carbon fibre composite, and powered by an Alfa Romeo 3.0 L twin turbo V6 engine. This car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. The engine produced 400 hp at 7,500 rpm. The Scighera had a top speed of 300 km/h. The all wheel drive system was derived from the Alfa Romeo 155. Italdesign was considering even a small-scale production, but unfortunately it never happened.

Mercedes-Benz F200 '96
Mercedes-Benz F200 '96.jpg
The Mercedes-Benz F 200 "Imagination" coupe was a concept study by then Daimler-Benz unveiled at the 1996 Paris Motor Show. The goal was to show off innovations in control, design, and comfort in passenger cars. The car's exterior design was in part based on the, then, upcoming S-Class.

One of the unique innovations was the implementation of "Sidesticks". Sidesticks were a drive by joystick design (rather than the conventional steering wheel and gas/brake pedals) that could be toggled between the driver and passenger. Other innovations included:

-Butterfly doors (to be utilized in the later Mercedes-Benz 2003 SLR McLaren)
-Electro-transparent panoramic roof class (to be utilized in the later 2002 Maybach 62)
-Video cameras in the place of rear view mirrors

Shelby GT500KR '68
Shelby GT500 KR '68.jpg
Like all 1968 Shelby Mustangs, the "King of the Road" benefited from a restyled, fiberglass front end with twin hood scoops and louvers. Details that made it stand out from a pack of Shelby Shelbys included "Cobra Jet 428" emblems on the fenders, dash and gas cap lid, and "GT500 KR" graphics on the front fenders.

All KRs came fitted with either Lucas or Marchal fog lamps in their front grille openings, Ford Thunderbolt-sourced taillights, chrome bumpers, a twin-exhaust configuration and contrasting Shelby stripes above the side skirts. Shelby built the GT500 KR in both fastback and convertible body styles. Only 318 drop-tops were assembled, as opposed to nearly 900 coupes, making them awfully rare and expensive nowadays.

Like most Mustangs, the Shelby GT500 KR was available with numerous options. Additional exterior features included various special paints, stripe packages and tinted glass.

The Shelby GT500 KR wasn’t called "King of the Road" for nothing. Under its long hood lied Ford’s most powerful engine for the 1968 model year — the 428 Cobra Jet. The 7.0-liter V-8 packed about 400 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque once it rolled off the assembly line and revved up to 5,600 rpm.

Mated to a Toploader four-speed manual transmission, the mill was powerful enough to send the GT500 KR flying from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6.5 seconds and up to a top speed of 225 km/h. For 1968, these were some amazing figures.

Giocattolo Group B '86
Giocattolo Group B '86.jpg
Giocattolo Motori Pty Ltd was a short-lived Australian car company, founded in 1986 by sports car enthusiast Paul Halstead and Formula One designer Barry Lock. The company's name comes from the Italian word for "toy".

The Giocattolo was originally based on a heavily modified Alfa Romeo Sprint with a mid-mounted Alfa V6 engine. By the fourth prototype, the V6 engine had proved to be too difficult and expensive to import and install in the car, so the company instead used a Sprint 4-cylinder body shell. The V6 was replaced by a rear-mounted Holden V8 engine built by Holden Special Vehicles. As well as being cheaper, these engines had more power than the Alfa engines they had originally intended to use; the reported top speed of the V8-powered Giocattolo was 260 km/h. It is unknown what happened to the factory Sprint engines and gearboxes that were taken from the cars.

Including the Alfa-powered third prototype (which was rebuilt and re-fitted with the Holden V8 after an accident with a police car almost destroyed the vehicle), just fifteen Giocattolos were built before the company folded in 1989. Thirteen of the fifteen cars are believed to still be in existence and one is unaccounted for. The other - Build No. 007 - was infamously destroyed in a fiery high-speed crash at Eastern Creek Raceway in February 2001, killing its driver, 29 year-old Todd Wilkes.
The third prototype appeared on the TV show Beyond 2000.
