Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR SuperSport '02
Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR SuperSport '02.jpg
Based on the limited production CLK GTR, the Super Sport represents the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz development. It is the product of H.W.A., a specialist firm which helped Mercedes-Benz prepare the original CLK-GTRs that raced the GT1 class at Le Mans. H.W.A. is also responsible for creating the 25 road going examples of the GT1 racecar. Among these HWA has prepared five roadsters and two even rarer super sports models having a much larger engine.

Its the new 7.3-liter, AMG engine which highlights the SuperSport's performance. Increased displacement gives the super sport 100 more horsepower than other CLK-GTRs, making this car one of the most powerful, naturally-aspired coupes. The car also gained an additional front splitter for better stability at high speeds. Only 2 were built with the 7.3L engine: chassis #03,chassis #17.

There is an even more powerful one-off version, built for someone from the United Arab Emirates, who spent 1 million on the car and another million on the engine tuning alone, making it 830 HP. A number that refered to the rumored F1 engine power output at the time.

All naturally aspirated off course. What else. I guess the AMG team learned a lot from that special build. :lol:

Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo Competition '06
Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo Competition '06.jpg
The competition package is a new option from Saleen that builds on the 750 hp S7, producing an astounding 1000 hp. The package is the latest evolution of the S7 supercar that first started production in 2001. The extra horsepower comes from increasing the boost of the twin-turbo system developed by Saleen.

The all-aluminum V8 engine casting was engineered and tooled by Saleen to displace seven liters. Space age materials and engineering are used throughout, including stainless steel valves, titanium retainers, beryllium exhaust valve seats, an aluminum throttle body, Saleen-designed aluminum CNC-machined cylinder heads and stainless steel exhaust system. The V8 incorporates a unique Saleen-designed side-mounted water pump, a belt-driven camshaft drive and a Saleen-engineered dry sump oil delivery system.

A major improvement in ride over previous models is achieved with the use of coil springs that are a dual-stage design. The first spring has a lower rate than the single springs fitted to the current S7, resulting in softer ride during normal street driving. But if you remember your history, you know that the S7 is a flat-bottom, downforce car. The faster you go, the more downforce the S7 develops. In the case of the S7’s new dual-stage springs, the second stiffer spring starts coming into play at around 100 mph when the car begins to develop serious downforce.

Chassis tuning also includes revised shock valving front and rear. Saleen-engineered Brembo-supplied lightweight aluminum six-piston mono-block calipers are fitted front and rear. The brakes are among the largest of any production car with 15-inch vented discs up front and 14-inch vented discs at the rear.

That CLK-GTR is just another proof that M-B is truly mental in all the right ways. If only all the other German manufacturers learned from them...

Chevrolet Corvair Monza GT '63
Chevrolet Corvair Monza GT '63.jpg
The Chevrolet Corvair Monza GT (Coupe) was presented together with the Monza SS (Spyder) in early 1963. Although both cars were based on the Corvair drive train, the GT had its engine layout turned around by 180 degrees, making it a real mid-engined sportscar, while the SS had the standard Corvair layout.

Both cars were designed by Larry Shinoda and Tony Lapine, but inspiration was also drawn from the Bertone designed Testudo. This is for instance reflected in the design of the GT doors, that were actually a front hinged canopy that extended into the B-style. Also the rear engine cover hinged at the rear. The engines used were standard flat sixes, although the GT had a two carb-layout while the SS had four Carburetors.

Although the SS came very close to series production, both cars ended up as concepts only, not unlikely also because of the tainted reputation of the Corvair. Shown here is the GT, at the GM's Heritage Center in Detroit.

The engine used was a standard Corvair 145 cu in (2,380 cc) 102 hp (76 kW), flat six with two carburetors. Unlike the production Corvair, the GT engine was mounted ahead of the transaxle, turned around 180 degrees and mounted as a mid-engine layout. The chassis was on a 92 in (2,337 mm) wheelbase, 16 inches (406 mm) shorter than production cars. The overall dimensions were similarly reduced with a length of 165 in (4,191.0 mm), and a height of 42 inches (1,067 mm), creating a small but well-proportioned sports car.

Besides its streamlined appearance, the Monza GT had innovative features, including magnesium-alloy wheels, 4-wheel disc brakes, and fixed seats with adjustable pedals. These features would eventually turn up in production cars, years later.

At first I thought this Corvair was just plain ugly, so I posted it on another car forum and people actually ended up likin' it. Image

I think it was Mohammed Bin Sulayem who had it built. Not completely sure though. Famous desert rallye driver and chairman of some exclusive Arab autoclubs. Has a nice collection of cars as well.
And at least he knows how to drive. Fast. Not F1 cars though... :whistle:

Edit:

http://www.streetfire.net/video/jason-p ... 101419.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is says 710HP btw. Brutal car.

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Edit2

OK it is the other way around. Mohammed had the CLK-GTR fitted with a 7.3L V12 AMG engine and the Super Sports version is based on that idea. He did pay for the development BTW. Something all Pagani owners have benefitted from later.

Rumors are, however, that his car has a rev limit of 10.000, where the others have only 8.500. So the extra HP (830) could be there.
Some say that even Illmor (Mario Illien) was involved with the development of that engine. They did the F1 engines at the time. So it might be very well possible that this engine is a one off, casted in the same exotic alloys as an F1 engine from that era. This is how legendary cars come into existance. :lol:
