Maserati GranSport Spyder '06
Maserati GranSport Spyder '06.jpg
The Maserati Coupé and Spyder (Tipo M138) are grand tourers produced by Italian automaker Maserati from 2001 to 2007. The Coupé and Spyder are both commonly referred to as the 4200 GT, which is an evolution of the prior model name and a reference to the increase in engine displacement from 3.2 L (3217 cc) to 4.2 L (4244 cc).

The Spyder was first unveiled to the public at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show with the Coupé's debut following shortly thereafter at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show. Sales in the United States began in March 2002 for the Spyder and in May for the Coupé. The release of the Spyder heralded Maserati's return to the North American market after an 11-year hiatus. Almost as soon as it was introduced, the Spyder was selected by Forbes as the Best GT for 2001.

The Coupé and Spyder were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, who also designed the Maserati Ghibli, and the later mid-engine 1971 supercar Maserati Bora. Interiors design was commissioned to Enrico Fumia and based heavily on 3200 GT interiors, restyled in 1999. The cars were built at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena, Italy.

The Maserati GranSport is a modified version of the Coupé and Spyder that was first unveiled at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show. It is equipped with aerodynamic body cladding, a chrome mesh grille, carbon fiber interior trim, and special 19-inch (480 mm) wheels. It uses the Skyhook active suspension, with a 0.4 inch (10 mm) lower ride height, and the Cambiocorsa transmission is recalibrated for quicker shifts. The exhaust is also specially tuned to "growl" on start-up and full throttle.

It is powered by the same 4244 cc, 90° V8 petrol engine used on the Coupé and Spyder. However, the engine develops 395 hp at 7000 rpm due primarily to a different exhaust system and improvements on the intake manifolds and valve seats. A six-speed paddle shift transmission comes as standard.

You are now focusing on more well known cars, aren't you?

The rear of that Maserati reminds me of the Callaway C12.

Nope. Only if you see the Maserati as the fat cousin of the Callaway, compare them now.

Chevrolet Astro I '67
Chevrolet Astro I '67.jpg
The Chevrolet Astro Corvair Corsa was designed by Larry Shinoda, who had also been responsible for the Mako Shark and the famous split window Corvette C2. It was presented at the New York Autoshow in 1967. The Astro was designed as an experiment to produce a very low drag coefficient, which was to be achieved by a very low roof line, a small frontal area and a (relatively) high back. It was because of this last requirement that the ideal powerplant for the car was found in the Corvair flat six engine, that had already been in production since 1961. The engine displaced 176 cubic inches, while it was fitted with a special cooling system using three centrifugal blowers, in order to keep the height as low as possible. The engine was capable of producing 240 HP at an amazing 7200 RPM, which was possible as the cylinder heads were fitted with one belt driven OHC. The combustion chambers were almost hemispherical and two triple Webers 40IDA were fitted.

The car has a sophisticated suspension with double wishbones fore and aft, two part magnesium were designed, whereby the inner part could be equipped with alternate rims, a good solution if you want to be able to use varying tyre widths.

The body was constructed of fiberglass, and one nice feature were the tilting seats, that upwards together with the roof, to give easier access to the car. The bubble on the roof contains an intricate mirror system to provide an unobstructed rear.

The car now sits in the General Motors Heritage Center in Detroit and makes occasional outings to prestigious events.

Nah, just mere coincidence. Image

I usually get inspiration for a car when I see it somewhere in the internet and if it insterests me, I get motivated to make the post for it before I end up forgettin' it. :geek:

IAME Justicialista Grand Sport '53
IAME Justicialista Grand Sport '53.jpg
The Institec Justicialista was a line of cars produced by the government of Argentina through its IAME (Industrias Aeronáuticas y Mecánicas del Estado) from 1953 to 1955 as an early attempt to form an Argentine automotive industry.

It used a front engine front wheel drive layout with a two-stroke two-cylinder engine derived from a German DKW design. and a conventional metal body. Due to the insistence of General Peron to have a sports car version made, a fiberglass two seat version was available as a coupe or roadster and featured a 1.5 liter air-cooled Porsche flat-four and a Porsche four-speed gearbox driving the front wheels.

The Grand Sport of 1953 was a flashy glassfibre in which a 1,498-cc flat-four Porsche engine was arranged to drive the front wheels. Also of Porsche make was the four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox with overdrive top. When General Peron was overthrown in 1955, the project was abandoned leading to the gradual disappearance of the Justicialista. It was later briefly revived as the short lived Wartburg powered Graciela.

Picchio D2 '03
Picchio D2 '03.jpg
At Daytona Beach (November 7, 2002) Picchio SpA unveiled their D2 Daytona Prototype. G&W Motorsports team managers Price and Carissa Cobb had the honors of pulling the silver cover off the new Picchio to reveal the Daytona Prototype painted in traditional Maserati livery.

It was the first time members of the media and racing community had a chance to see the completed Picchio D2, the only European-manufactured Daytona Prototype. The car carried the Maserati of Orange County logo on the nose and front door panels of the blue, silver and red car, raising many questions as to a possible association between the two.

"This particular car here will run at the Rolex with the BMW engine," explained Motorsports Manager Armando Trentini. "The second car will come with a Maserati engine."

While the BMW and Maserati power plants are currently the only two under development for the Picchio D2, the Italian manufacturer plans to offer several different kits and engine packages.

"If someone comes to us and wants a Nissan engine, we will give them the kit with that engine," said Trentini.

Currently, G&W Motorsports plans to run two Picchio Daytona Prototypes at the 2003 Rolex 24 At Daytona, however Cobb said that the team should have a third car on-hand for any interested parties. Four P2 chassis are being built, with the two additional chassis ready for sale at this time.

"The best part about this car is the serviceability during the long races," Cobb noted. "The ease of maintenance on this car is amazing. A team can work on the car much easier and quicker. The down force and aero packages on these are great."

The new Picchio is tentatively scheduled to run its first test at the end of the month at Virginia International Raceway, home of G&W Motorsports. The Picchio Daytona Prototype will be on display to the public throughout the weekend in the garage area outside the media center at Daytona International Speedway during the Dark Dog Grand American Finale.

Colani Utah 8 '89
Colani Utah 8 '89.jpg
Colani’s team needed just under six months to realize this concept of a roadworthy sportscar prototype based on a BMW motorcycle engine. The Plexiglas hood fitted in the negatively shaped suitcase form. The low-lying 4-cylinder BMW turbo engine (1000cc) generated 160 hp and was made by Swiss fine-tuners Zoller - power transmission to the Lotus Super Seven rear axle was achieved by using a 4-speed BMW mc gearbox. Special characteristics: the rearview mirror attached to aerodynamic outsets. Only 90cm high and weighing in at a mere 550 kg, the experimental sportscar boasted second-to-none acceleration.
