BMW M3 GTR Straßenversion '03
BMW M3 GTR Straßenversion '03.jpg
In 1998, the all-new BMW 3 Series, codenamed the E4, was introduced. Two years later, in 2000, a new BMW M3 arrived built on the E46 platform. The M3 was powered by a newly developed 3.2-liter DOHC inline-6 that produced 338 HP. This M3 was quickly transformed into a race car, just in time to contest in the first round of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

BMW's race team, Team PTG, made many improvements to the vehicle throughout the season. Power was significantly increased, and the car's aerodynamics were dramatically improved. But this was nothing compared to a purpose-built M3 race machine to come. This model arrived in February 2002 as the M3 GTR.

The big buzz surrounding the GTR centered around its engine. All previous M3 models came powered by an inline-6, but the M3 GTR sported a completely new 3997cc V8. The street version of the new V8 produced 374 HP, while the race car's power was increased to 443 HP. The bumpers and spoilers were bigger than those of a normal M3 and made of carbon fiber. The hood was raised and a vent added to help cool the engine. This monster vehicle was completely different from a normal M3, and it AC Schnitzer-tuned powerplant helped make it a champion on numerous occasions in the ALMS.

It's based on a Honda S600 Chassis and dates from 1970. It probably had the same engine of the S600.

With perhaps under ten made, it can be seen in a few places on the web. At least one appears to be in the US.

The car also goes by the name Flying Pegasus.

I had feelin' you would know something about this car since I remember you postin' some Watanabe's cars on the Guess That Car thread. Thanks for the information, Lugi. Image

What else do you know about Carrozeria Watanabe?

Almost nothing else, only that Masao Watanabe also created 3 more cars, one of which doesn't seem to have a name, look it up: Basilic & Lycaon

Watanabe Griffon '70
Watanabe Griffon '70.jpg
After the first series of Japanese Grand Prix events held through the mid to late 1960s, the racing scene absolutely exploded in Japan, with amateurs and professionals alike hurriedly taking to local tracks in order to experience the joys of driving quickly.

Living on an isolated island means that enthusiasts were forced to improvise, especially when it came to sourcing spare parts. For sports car and formula racing, it would be even more difficult to get parts—especially body parts. For those, a number of small constructors took to their own sketch pads and created everything from wings to entire cars from fibreglass. One such person was Masao Watanabe, an engineer by trade who was swept up in the racing craze and was found to be very skilled at creating and setting up Formula 3 cars.

In 1970 at the 3rd annual Tokyo Racing Car Show, Watanabe had a big surprise for attendees: a Honda S600-based sports car called the Flying Pegasus.

Not much is known about the car, besides it being commissioned by Mobil 1 for use in advertising. There are few photos of the cars, with five or fewer believed to exist today. Confusingly, the car was updated and later named the Griffon.

What is clear, however, is that this Honda S600-based coupe would have been a solid performer. With a dual overhead cam 606cc 4-cylinder engine, Honda was able to extract 57 horsepower at a screaming 8,500 rpm. The original S600 had a top speed around 140 km/h, but with Watanabe's new bodywork, the top speed was improved to 160 km/h.

That's actually a lot of text for a car you said you couldn't gather information, good work.

Now compare it with this other one. :loll:

While the colors in the first 4 pictures are not to my liking, it fits the Griffon well and love the overall design of it.

Beautiful car.

Damn, if only Carrozeria Watanabe got some love like Zagato and Pininfarina, what could they be designing today?

Things could be a lot more interesting for sure, that would be the only "Carrozeria" from Japan (All the others that are well known are from Italy) if it was alive today. :(

This car is a nightmare, I'm havin' more difficult tryin' to build a post for it than when I was tryin' to make one for the Watanabe Griffon. :angry-screaming:

Information about this exact model of the C111 are pretty confusing.
