Renault R5 Turbo '80
Renault R5 Turbo '80.jpg
The Renault 5 Turbo or R5 Turbo is a high-performance hatchbackautomobile launched by the French manufacturer Renault at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1980. The car was primarily designed for rallying, but was also sold in a street version.

In response to Lancia's rallying success with the mid-engined Stratos, Renault's Jean Terramorsi, vice-president of production, asked Bertone’s Marc Deschamps to design a new sports version of the Renault 5 Alpine supermini. The distinctive new rear bodywork was styled by Marcello Gandini at Bertone.

Although the standard Renault 5 has a front-mounted engine, the 5 Turbo featured a mid-mounted 1397cc Cléon turbocharged engine placed behind the driver in mid-body in a modified Renault 5 chassis. In standard form, the engine developed 160 horsepower and 163 lb·ft (221 N·m) torque.

Though it used a modified body from a standard Renault 5, and was badged as a Renault 5, the mechanicals were radically different, the most obvious difference being rear-wheel drive and rear-mid-engined instead of the normal version's front-wheel drive and front-mounted engine. At the time of its launch it was the most powerful production French car. The first 400 production 5 Turbos were made to comply with Group 4 homologation to allow the car to compete in international rallies, and were manufactured at the Alpine factory in Dieppe.

Bizzarrini GT Europa 1900 '66
Bizzarrini GT Europa 1900 '66.jpg
Bizzarrini S.p.A. was an Italian automotive manufacturer in the 1960s founded by former Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and ISO engineer, Giotto Bizzarrini. The company built a small number of highly developed and advanced sport and racing automobiles.

Giotto Bizzarrini quickly realised that to safeguard the future of his fledgling company, the Bizzarrini line-up would benefit from a more affordable model alongside the 5300 GT, which would appeal to a broader market. He received further encouragement from an investor friend, who suggested that the proposed GT Europa would be eligible for a government grant, which would allow Bizzarrini to construct a larger factory. Showing typical poor business acumen, Giotto Bizzarrini agreed that he would build a prototype at his own expense before applying for the grant and looking for further investments.

In many ways a downsized 5300 GT, the GT Europa was built around a steel platform centre section with front and rear subframes. The prototype featured a DeDion rear axle but to further cut costs, the production car sported double wishbones on all four corners, with an anti-roll bar on the front axle only. Bizzarrini initially intended to use a Fiat 1500 'four' but eventually settled on the Opel 1900 through his connections with General Motors. This unusual engine featured a camshaft mounted in the head, which actuated the valves through push rods. Equipped with a single Solex carburettor, it produced around 110 hp. A four-speed ZF gearbox was also used.

Bizzarrini's in-house designer Pietro Vanni penned the GT Europa 1900 lines, which were also closely based on those of the 5300 GT and were further refined in the wind-tunnel of the university of Pisa. Created in fibreglass, the body sported a particularly airy cockpit thanks to the tall glass sections of the doors that cut into the roof. The completed car tipped the scales at just 640 kg and this was balanced perfectly between the two axles because the engine was mounted almost underneath the dashboard. The prototype was ready in time for the 1966 Turin Motor Show where it was very well received.

Encouraged by the successful launch, Bizzarrini ordered enough components and fibreglass bodies for 50 examples. Sadly, but also hardly surprisingly, the promised investments and government grants never materialised. This made the GT Europa more expensive and time consuming to build and this, together with the sharp price, left very little room for profit. Other Bizzarrini ventures also proved troublesome and within a few years, bankruptcy was inevitable.

By that time only twelve GT Europas were built, including a Spyder and at least one ss, which featured a more powerful, twin carburettor engine. After the sale of the unused components, at least five more examples were built. Praised for its superb handling, the GT Europa could have been Bizzarrini's saviour but unfortunately, the hugely talented engineer lacked the necessary business savvy to secure the finances necessary.

Volkswagen Passat R36 '07
Volkswagen Passat R36 '07.jpeg
The Volkswagen Passat is a large family car produced by the German manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973, through eight design generations.

The Passat R36 was conceived by Volkswagen Individual, the specialist team for very fast and/or special models. Following the Golf R32, the Passat R36 was the second series version to be debuting under the "R" sports label. The "R32" label already represents a top-selling model; the first Golf R32 (241 hp) based on the fourth Golf generation and introduced in midsummer 2002, took off better than expected in every way; 14,000 cars were sold.

On the foundation of this success the idea arose to develop a whole series of R models in the future. In Autumn 2005 the second Golf R32, 250 hp, equipped with 4MOTION four-wheel drive as standard equipment, was introduced. It was also a terrific seller. And it continues to sell well today. Starting in 2007 the "R36" shows how sporty a Passat Sedan and a Passat Variant can be.

Visually, with a whole range of specific features the new Passat R36 shows that it is the most dynamic model of the globally successful series. Special features of the front section: an R-specific bumper and a crest radiator grill in matte chrome finish. Other R exclusives are the dual fins of the upper radiator grill designed in aluminum look and the radiator air inlets in slatted look.

The rear of the Passat R36 sedan features a newly designed spoiler on the luggage compartment lid; in the case of the Passat Variant R36 a new roof edge spoiler provides additional downward force to the rear axle. Identical for both body versions: the chrome dual exhaust pipes. On the sides it is, among other things, the newly designed 18-inch "Omanyt" alloy wheels and wheel arch extensions in the car color that were specially developed for the Passat R36.

Volkswagen BlueSport '09
Volkswagen Bluesport '09.jpg
The Volkswagen Concept BlueSport is a mid-engined roadster concept car produced by Volkswagen. It was introduced at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Concept BlueSport follows on from a previous roadster concept car, the Volkswagen Concept R, shown at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Concept BlueSport is powered by a mid-mounted 180 hp 2.0-liter Clean Diesel (TDI) with common rail injection engine. Volkswagen says that it can make the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 6.6 seconds and tops out at 230 km/h. The engine is mated to a a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox mounted closer to the front of the car, which gives it a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution.

The concept has some fun stuff like bi-xenon LED headlights outside and a touch screen command center inside. This all comes in a package that weights only 1200 kg.

Koenigsegg CC Prototype '98
Koenigsegg CC Prototype '94.jpg
In 1994 Christian von Koenigsegg and his team took inspiration from the Ferrari F40 and McLaren F1 to create a minimalistic, pure, no nonsense Supercar with a Swedish twist to it. Christian understood that if features, design and performance did not only match but in many ways exceeded the existing Supercars, no one would look twice at a startup car company from Sweden. Apart from having a great chassis with great handling from the get go, the CC featured the unique Koenigsegg detachable and storable roof, that was fully integrated in the coupe shape. This was truly unique among supercars at this time. Remember this was before the F50 and the Carrera GT and neither of these cars did a very good job at making the car look like a perfect coupe with the roof on like the CC, and the F50 could not even store the roof in the car.

The CC chassis floor pan was already sandwiched Carbon at this time and so was the whole body. Apart from this extensive space frame technology with chromolybdenium tubes were used to create the rest of the chassis, in combination with a steel monocoque design, that later gave inspiration to the full carbon monocoque chassis that went into production.

The CC was also the first Koenigsegg to feature the unique dihedral door actuation mechanism that proved both practical and truly unique. A mechanism that has defined the brand and set it apart from everyone else. The scaling up of the shape of the first CC prototype from design model to real car, was done completely by hand, by Christian and his team and in a hurry – hence the car looked a bit rough around the edges and the proportions was a bit off. But the CC served its purpose as a testing mule, getting attention and showing the promise of the startup company as, the CC was great to drive.

The engine was a standard Audi 4.2 V8 with and Audi transaxle connected to it. This engine was chosen as a Christian thought it could be a good base for a more tuned version going towards production. However Koenigsegg never managed to strike a supply deal with Audi so Koenigsegg had to look for other solutions going towards production. The next choice was then a Motori Moderni 1235 flat-12 F1 engine suited for road use.

Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG '04
Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG '04.jpg
The CLK DTM AMG sports car was a special version of the C208 CLK, which looks similar to the full race car for the German Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters racing series which has to use a normally aspirated 4.0 L V8, limited to less than 500 hp.

100 Coupés and 80 Convertibles were released for sale in Europe, using AMG's supercharged 5.4 L V8, now producing 582 hp and 800 N·m (590 lb·ft). The front and rear track are widened by 2.9 and 4.2 inches (74 and 110 mm) respectively, and special tires and suspension modifications allow the car to pull 1.35 g (13 m/s²) of lateral acceleration. 0–100 km/h acceleration is just 3.8 seconds, and top speed is limited to 322 km/h. The CLK DTM AMG was only produced for the 2004 model year and the initial release of the vehicle was limited to special order or invitation of ownership.
