Ferrari LaFerrari '13
Ferrari LaFerrari '13.jpg
The LaFerrari (also known by its project name, F150) is a limited production hybrid sports car built by Italian sports car maker Ferrari. The car and its name were officially unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show.

The LaFerrari was designed by the Ferrari design team led by Flavio Manzoni and, according to its designers, it is the perfect combination of form and function.

The model was designed using F1-inspired aerodynamics and delivers a drag coefficient of nearly 0.3. The new LaFerrari is equipped with front diffusers and guide vane on the underbody, plus rear diffusers and spoiler which generate downforce when needed without adding excessive drag. These elements are automatically deployed on the basis of a number of different performance parameters, which are monitored in real time by the car’s dynamic vehicle controls. When viewed from the side, the new LaFerrari it is easily recognizable as a Ferrari, as it features a sharp, downward-sloping nose and a very low bonnet which emphasizes its muscular wheel arches.

On the inside, Ferrari installed a newly designed steering wheel that sports all the major commands, plus longer and more ergonomic gear-shift paddles. Just like with the exterior, the interior is inspired by the company’s track cars. The driver’s seat is fixed and tailored to the driver, and both the pedal box and steering wheel are adjustable. The driving position is similar to that of a single-seat racecar and was designed after consultation with the Scuderia Ferrari drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.

The new LaFerrari is the first ever Ferrari to feature a hybrid system. The car’s HY-KERS system combines a 6,262 cc (6.3-liter) V-12 engine with two electric motors — one motor powers the driven wheels and the second drives the ancillaries. These electric motors are powered by a battery pack attached to chassis’ floor and they consist of cells assembled in the Scuderia Ferrari department where the KERS for the F138 is also made.

The battery can be recharged in two different ways: under braking (even hard braking with the ABS active) and every time the V-12 produces more torque than required. This system delivers a total of 963 horsepower — 800 delivered by the V-12 engine and 163 by the electric motors — and a peak torque in excess of 663 pound-feet. The hybrid system is coupled to an F1 dual-clutch gearbox and sprints the car from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.

Alfa Romeo 6C 3000 CM Superflow IV '56
Alfa Romeo 3000 CM Superflow IV '56.jpg
The Alfa Romeo 6C name was used on road, race, and sports cars produced between 1927 and 1954 by Alfa Romeo; the "6C" name refers to six cylinders of the car's straight-six engine. Bodies for these cars were made by coachbuilders such as James Young, Zagato, Touring Superleggera, Castagna, and Pininfarina.

Early in the 1950s after Alfa Romeo suspended its racing ventures, various existing competition cars were discarded. Some of these vehicles were sold to privateers, and some were given to Pininfarina and Boano, specialist coachbuilders for future endeavors. The 6C 3000 CM (chassis 00128) was given to Pinin Farina who had the creative task of turning it into something stunning. With a coupe body built by Carrozzeria Colli, the Alfa Romeo 6C 3000 CM Superflow IV began its life as a racecar with a very different coupe body.

Beginning its life as one of the six works cars constructed for the 1953 season, chassis 00128 was powered by the latest development of Alfa's legendary twin-cam straight six. Producing nearly 275 horsepower, the engine displaced just under 3.5 liters through six Weber carbs. An exceptional creation, the 6C 3000 CM featured a steel tubular spaceframe chassis, a DeDion rear axle and independent front suspension. The original car was used by Juan Manuel Fangio to place second at the 1953 Mille Miglia.

Pininfarina designers were able to work their magic on the compact chassis after they removed the Colli body. First launched at the 1956 Turin Motor Show, the Superflow sported a futuristic design with open front wheels covered by plexiglass panels that also pulled double duty as headlight covers. Its wild, yet sleek body featured upswinging windows and was painted white with a black stripe. Front and center on the low nose was the trademark Alfa Romeo grille. The tail featured very flamboyant fins, the roof plexiglass with hinged 'gullwing' sections.

The car returned as the Superflow II in Paris later that year. It was resplendent in fresh red paint with a white stripe. A much more conservative model, the II sported a much more angular nose and more modern steel fenders. Farina was much more reserved with the plexiglass, only using it for the headlight covers this time.

Three years later the model reappeared once again, this time at the 1959 Geneva Motor Show as the Spyder Super Sport, or Superflow III. The finned tail was no longer there, and instead featured a curvy elegant rear end. The roof was open and spacious with twin headrests. The nose remained the same but the headlight covers were gone. The Superflow III was dazzling in all white paint.

The recycled racecar appeared one final time in 1960 at the Geneva Motor Show as the Superflow IV or Coupe Super Sport Speziale. Using all of the best features from the past three models, the IV brought back the domed roof and the plexiglass headlight covers. Panels were no longer hinged and could instead slide down and back underneath the rear window, which made the car either a Coupe or Spyder. The classic rear end from the III was kept.

Pininfarina used the Superflow evolution through the years as an illustration of the changing trends and tastes during the 1950s and 1960s. Extreme at first, the Superflow molded itself through the years into an incredibly tasteful racecar, elegant and very typical of the 1960s. The Superflow would also be the inspiration for many future Alfa Romeo models, especially the famous Duetto Spyder in 1966. After its career as a show car, the Superflow IV was driven extensively around the U.S. and displayed in Alfa Romeo showrooms to gauge the reaction of the public.

Sports Car Illustrated called the Superflow IV 'one of the most savage machines' with 'performance that's long-legged and sustained'. The Superflow IV featured four drum brakes bimetallic, with deep helical finning. The rear brakes were mounted in-board and had conventional leading-trailing mechanism with floating pivots. The suspension at the rear was de Dion. The magazine gave the Superflow IV high points for exceptional traction thanks to a tail-heavy weight distribution with very little chance of spinning the rear wheels, even with high gearing. 'Surprisingly smooth-riding' for a pure racing car, according to SCI, the Superflow IV is an excellent example of the famous Italian's exquisite workmanship.

Wiesmann GT MF5 '11
Wiesmann GT MF5 '11.jpg
Wiesmann GmbH was a German automobile manufacturer based in Dülmen, Germany. The company was founded in 1988 by two brothers, engineer Martin Wiesmann and businessman Friedhelm Wiesmann. The cars are manufactured by hand in Dülmen. The Wiesmann logo portrays a gecko, as they claim their cars "stick to the road like geckos to a wall".

The GT MF5 is a closed two-seater with more power than the other models. It is a perfect blend of the corporate philosophy’s contents, which is a combination of beautiful body shapes and state-of-the-art technology. The appearance of this super sports car alone would clearly signal the arrival of something extraordinary: a very low and cowered-down body in combination with wide base tyres stand for abounding power and a highly racy vehicle to be expected.

The drive system of this super sports car comprises a 12:1 compacted V 10-cylinder front-mounted mid-engine with a cubic capacity of 5 litres boasting 555 hp which are generated by 7,750 crankshaft rotations. A maximum torque of 385.5 ft-lb ensures a powerful drive at all speeds and driving fun at its best.

In spite of all its safety features, the vehicle’s bigger size, the engine’s high capacity, and the corresponding sequential 7-speed transmission system (in connection with a variable differential lock) account for a modest increase in weight of only 100 kg compared to the MF 4. The resulting driving performance is beyond each doubt: the acceleration time of 0 – 100 km/h is 3.8 seconds, and a top speed of 315 km/h. With this value the MF 5 ranks among the top class of the sportsters league.

Saleen S5S Raptor '08
Saleen S5S Raptor '08.jpg
The Saleen S5S Raptor is a concept car revealed by Saleen on March 20, 2008 at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

The Raptor is a two seat mid-engine super car that competes in size and style with core offerings from the most notable of Italian exotic car makes, but with a segment leading 650hp and 630 lb-ft of torque provided by a Saleen 5.0L Supercharged Engine - the source of the S5S designation. Unlike its competitors, the Raptor is designed to digest cellulosic ethanol. This is the same ethanol formula, states Wilbur, that is the official fuel of the 2008 American Le Mans Race Series and the IRL.

The Raptor’s hand-built 5.0L cubic inch engine with its patented twin-screw supercharger delivers its 650 horses at 6300 rpm and hits max torque at just 4400 RPM. This power sits on call beneath the knob of a close ratio 6-speed manual, or optional paddle shifting sequential gearbox. It’s a combination that send Raptor’s rigid aluminum chassis screaming to a top speed of over 320 km/h.

General Motors Le Sabre '51
General Motors Le Sabre '51.jpg
The General Motors Le Sabre was a 1951 concept car. Possibly the most important show car of the 1950s, it introduced aircraft-inspired design elements such as the wrap-around windshield and tail fins, which became common on automotive designs during the second half of the decade.

The Le Sabre was the brainchild of General Motors Art Department head Harley Earl. The design was Earl's attempt to incorporate the look of modern jet fighter aircraft into automotive design.[citation needed] As jets replaced prop-driven aircraft in the late 1940s, they symbolized the very latest in design and engineering, and Earl had hoped to carry this concept into automobile design.

The project was a follow-up to Earl's famous 1938 Y-job. Like all his projects, it was built to be roadworthy, and became Earl's personal automobile for two years after finishing its tour of the auto show circuit. With a body made of aluminium, magnesium, and fiberglass, it was powered by a supercharged 215 cu in (3.5 L) V8 able to run on gasoline (petrol) or methanol (like Indy roadsters of the period did), and had an unusually-placed rear-mounted Buick Dynaflow automatic transmission. This was later changed to a GM Hydramatic. In addition to its jet inspired design, the 1951 Le Sabre also featured numerous advanced features, including a 12-volt electrical system (most cars of the period were 6-volt), heated seats, electric headlights concealed behind the center oval "jet intake", front bumper dagmars (later made famous on 1957-9 Cadillacs), a water sensor to activate the power top, and electric lifting jacks integral to the chassis to aid tire changes. (This idea would be copied decades later by Formula One race teams.)

The Le Sabre was GM's first use of a rear-mounted transmission, which would reappear in the Pontiac Tempest. It was also the first use of the aluminum-block 215, which appeared in the Buick Special and Skylark, Oldsmobile Cutlass/F-85 and Jetfire, Pontiac Tempest and LeMans, and ultimately in numerous British marques, including Rover, Triumph, MG, and Morgan.

A 215 cubic-inch V8 ventilated by 90-degree, opposed valves in hemispherical chambers represented the best of racing technology. However, the valves are operated by an elaborate arrangement of pushrods from a single camshaft suspended under the intake manifold; new technology, old technology, and clever-solution technology meeting on a common ground. Induction is accomplished by a Detroit Diesel Supercharger of the Roots variety, with a pair of three-blade impellers augmenting fuel and air compression.

When Le Sabre was new, a pair of Bendix Eclipse side-draft Carburetors carefully metered two different fuels. At low or constant speeds one Carburetor drew premium gasoline from an aluminium fuel tank lined with a rubber safety bladder. When the accelerator was pressed over half its stroke a progressive linkage opened the second Carburetor, which drew from another 20-gallon-bladder tank filled with methyl alcohol (methanol). Presently, the Supercharger has to make do with the gasoline system alone.

Subaru WRX STI '15
Subaru WRX STI '15.jpg
The Subaru Impreza is a compact automobile, manufactured since 1992 by Subaru—the automobile division of Japanese transportation conglomerate, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI). Subaru introduced the Impreza as a replacement for the Leone, with the Leone's EA series engines replaced by the newer EJ series versions. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants.

The STI has always been a meaner looking version of the plebeian Impreza WRX, and the fourth generation version is no different. While the overall profile is reminiscent of the base Impreza, the STI features unique doors, fenders, bumpers and hood. The hood is made from aluminum to reduce weight over the nose, and the large scoop that feeds the intercooler has been mounted deeper to improve forward visibility. The headlamp and taillamp assemblies are also bespoke to the STI.

A full aerodynamic body kit is included and features a rear diffuser as well as a large rear wing; a signature feature for STI sedans. Other noticeable changes to the STI include mesh screened fender vents and a carbon-fiber look trim around the foglight assemblies.

The engine in the all-new STI is a turbocharged 2.5-liter, boxer four that makes 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. If that sounds familiar, it is because it is the exact same engine that has been powering the STI since 2008. A bespoke six-speed manual is the only transmission option.

While it seems Subaru has skimped on the drivetrain, the chassis and handling abilities of the new STI should be leagues ahead of its predecessor. The actual chassis of the car has been stiffened dramatically and the spring rates have been firmed up to provide a sharper on-road feel. The steering rack has also been tightened up and now features a fast 13:1 ratio.

The advanced AWD system has been enhanced with a new Active Torque Vectoring system that can apply brake pressure to individual wheels to create a more neutral feeling through corners.

BMW M4 Coupe '14
BMW M4 Coupe '14.jpg
The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, the BMW M GmbH. Part of the renumbering that BMW splits the 3 Series coupe and convertible models to the 4 Series (to further differentiate with the 3 Series sedans), the M4 replaces the M3 Coupe and Convertible models. Upgrades over the standard 4-Series include more powerful and responsive engines, improved handling, suspension, and braking systems, aerodynamic body enhancements, and interior/exterior accents with the tri-colour "M" (Motorsport) badging.

When designing the new M4 Coupe, BMW focused its attention on making the car as aerodynamically efficient as possible. Being aerodynamically efficient means that BMW designed the M4 to keep drag as low as possible and to create as much downforce as it could within the design constraints. The latter of these two is where BMW had to be very creative in how it designed every component.

Weight loss was another focus with the M4 Coupe, and BMW did not skimp in its efforts. First up is a carbon-fiber roof that helps drop the car’s curb weight by more than 11 pounds when compared to the M3 Coupe. This lightweight roof also helps lower M4’s center of gravity, which reduces body roll and enhances handling. Along with the high-tech roof, are the aluminum front fenders and hood. These lightweight components on the front end also help reduce the front-axle weight of the M4, bringing it closer to the optimal 50:50 weight distribution.

BMW has always rolled out awesome M-Series models, but the naturally aspirated V-8 engine was tired and simply couldn’t hang with modern turbocharged engines. BMW responded by replacing the old 4.0-liter V-8 with a high-strung 3.0-liter, in-line six-cylinder engine that features M TwinPower Turbo technology, with Valvetronic and Double VANOS handling the valves and camshaft. The engine mates to a standard six-speed manual gearbox that weighs 26.4 pounds less than the six-cog gearbox in the M3 Coupe. What’s more, this advanced six-speed manual features carbon friction linings on its synchros for smoother shifts and, for the first time ever, it features a throttle blip — automatic heel-toe — during downshifts.

Sbarro Essenza '10
Sbarro Essenza '10.jpg
The students of Espera Montbeliard have created a white sport coupe with black painted front and rear mask for the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. What characterizes it is its long hood, the side profile, an air outlet, a rear roof totally blind and a double hump in the manner of a Zagato.

The interior is no exception and is breathtaking when one considers the constraints of rapid design and manufacturing imposed on the students of Espera.

On the mechanical side, the car is powered by a BMW 6-cylinder, developing 200 horsepower. This, combined with light weight of the machine (850 kg). The Essenza is not a simple prototype, but a fully functioning car. It made its first ride just before the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

Extract from the booklet distributed at the Geneva Motor Show 2010:

"True passion fruit, Essenza is born of inspiration drawn from the depths of each of its creators. Paradox between the generosity of its forms and the momentum of its lines, Essenza is a concept of strong character despite the purity color. In a few weeks promoting their 2009-2010 school ESPERA Sbarro Montbéliard has given a soul and a personality to this unique concept. Essenza is the culmination of over 15.000 hours of work and discovery traditional methods of prototyping."
