Bugatti Type 101 Antem Coupe '51
Bugatti Type 101 Antem Coupe '51.jpg
Towards the end of World War II, Ettore Bugatti set about creating an all-new and altogether more affordable production model due to be constructed in a purpose-built factory in Levallois near Paris. Known as the Type 73, the four-cylinder engined machine duly debuted at the 1947 Paris Auto Salon. Sadly, all momentum was lost with the death of Ettore Bugatti himself during the same year, and the ambitious project was abandoned altogether.

While the company was restructured, Bugatti's general manager Pierre Marco and Ettore's youngest son from his first marriage Roland created the Type 101. Very much a stopgap until a brand new Bugatti was ready, this was effectively a Type 57 with a contemporary body. The mechanicals were only changed where strictly necessary. At the Paris Auto Salon, Bugatti showed two examples of the Type 101, a Coupe and Cabriolet both clothed by longterm partner Gangloff.

Underneath the modern, pontoon fender bodies, the Type 101 was every bit a Type 57, which was introduced nearly two decades. Retained were the basic ladder frame as well as the solid axles on both ends, which were already far from state-of-the-art when Type 57 production ceased in 1940. One of the rare changes compared to the earlier design was the addition of a Weber carburettor as the Strombergs previously used were no longer available. Running on the low grade fuel available, the supercharged straight eight was good for around 140 hp.

Sticking with the existing underpinnings was ultimately the Type 101's undoing. This was not so much because of the outdated chassis or suspension but more down to the size of the engine. Encouraging people to buy smaller, more frugal cars as the petrol supply was still not completely restored, the French government had dramatically increased taxes on large engines. Firmly established companies like Delahaye and Talbot Lago struggled with these penalties, so it was no surprise that Bugatti could not find customers for the Type 101.

Eventually, only seven chassis were produced, including the two prototypes. Each was fitted with a different style body and one was not clothed until the early 1960s when it was fitted with a particularly striking body designed by Virgil Exner. All seven still exist, three of which are on permanent display in the Musée National de l'Automobile in Mulhouse. One more attempt was made to revive Bugatti but this did not result in much more than a handful of prototypes and two unsuccessful Grand Prix racers.

Gumpert Explosion '14
Gumpert Explosion '14.jpg
Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH is a German supercar manufacturing company headquartered in Altenburg. Roland Gumpert, the founder and owner of Gumpert, once held the position of Director of Audi Sport. Under his management, Audi won a total of 25 World Rally Championship races and 4 World Rally Championship titles.

The Gumpert Explosion made its debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the company went with a new twist, introducing the new Gumpert Explosion, unlike the mid-engined Apollo, which was designed with track performance in mind, hence the low ground clearance and the massive rear wings, the Explosion is a little more of a conventional sports coupe in terms of its dimensions.

The Gumpert Explosion carries a 2.0-liter, turbocharge four-cylinder engine, which may seem a little small for the automaker, but its 420 horsepower at 6,450 rpm and 383 pound-feet of torque at 4,550 rpm quickly negate that thought. The engine is mated to either a six-cog, paddle-shifted auto or a six-speed manual, and power heads out to all four wheels. Gumpert said the car can reach 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds.

Audi Sport quattro '13
Audi Sport quattro '13.jpg
The 2013 Audi Sport quattro was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original Audi Sport quattro first shown at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show on 3 March.

Just like with the original Sport quattro model, the 2013 Audi Sport quattro was designed in the spirit of motorsport and following the tradition of all the recently launched supercar, it is a high-performance model offering three driving modes: EV, hybrid and sport. The new Sport quattro Concept was designed following a tradition that began back in the 1980s. It features angular, flat C-pillars and rectangular double headlights.

Up front, the concept offers the usual hexagonal Singleframe grille with a new, sculpted grille insert — an element borrowed from motorsport. There are also two large, vertical blades dividing each of the large air inlets and a carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) splitter that is also inspired by the racing world. On the rear, the concept features a spoiler placed on the lower edge of the rear window, a CFRP diffuser with a honeycomb-designed upper section. In true quattro styling form, the taillights feature a rectangular design and two large, oval tailpipes. For improved stability at high speeds the concept comes equipped with an expandable spoiler.

The Audi Sport quattro is powered by a plug-in hybrid drive that combines a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 combustion engine with a a disc-shaped electric motor. The V-8 plant delivers a total of 552 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, while the electric motor adds another 147 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. With a combined output of 700 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, the Sport quattro sprints to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and up to a top speed of 305 km/h.

Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione '12
Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione '12.jpg
The Ferrari 599 (internal code F141) is an Italian sports car produced by Ferrari. It was the brand's two-seat flagship, replacing the 575M Maranello in 2006 as a 2007 model, but was replaced for the 2013 model year by the F12berlinetta. Styled by Pininfarina under the direction of Ferrari's Frank Stephenson, the 599 GTB debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in February 2006. It is named for its total engine displacement (5999 cc), Gran Turismo Berlinetta nature, and the Fiorano Circuit test track used by Ferrari.

The 599XX is a car designed for track use only and is not street legal, based on 599 GTB. On November 10, 2011, the first images of the 599XX Evoluzione surfaced, the new 599XX Evoluzione features improved chassis dynamics thanks to an active aerodynamic package integrated with the vehicles’ electronic control systems and the adoption of new Pirelli tires. The new aero package uses an active rear wing that features two flaps, with profiles similar to those used in Formula 1, which rotate electronically to adjust the downforce between the front and rear axles in function of vehicle speed and the maneuver being effected.

It weighs 35 kg less than a standard 599XX and has slightly improved peak power of an extra 30 HP for the 599XX’s 6.0L V12 engine. One of the key features of the EVO is its active rear wing which can adjust automatically to provide increased cornering performance.

Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Aerodinamica Spider '35
Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Aerodinamica Spider '35.jpg
Collectors call the Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Aerodinamica Spider the “Croatian Alfa”.

In the mid-1930s – as the car manufacturer faced the challenges posed by strong international competitors such as the German Auto Union and Daimler-Benz – an Italian designer of Hungarian descent working for Alfa Romeo, Vittorio Jano (1981-1965), had a brilliant intuition.

He involved Gino and Oscar Jankovits – the sons of an Alfa Romeo dealer in Fiume – in an ambitious new design. Now known as Rijeka, and part of Croatia, Fiume was annexed to Italy at the time.

Between 1934 and 1940, working in their garage and body shop, “Lampo”, the two brothers brought to life Wilfredo Ricart’s sketches and created a truly wonderful vehicle. Jano provided Jankovits with Alfa Romeo parts and his expertise. Jankovits built, tested, and developed the vehicle in Fiume. Chassis number 700315, a 6C 2300 chassis, was shipped to Fiume. The engine bay was large enough to house a V12, but instead was given a six-cylinder engine modified with triple Weber 36 D04 carburetors.

Development of the car continued over several years, until Jano was fired from Alfa in 1937, just prior to the car being finished. This meant that an chance to fit a new V12 vanished. The Jankovits kept the Aerospider and had it registered for street use. The car still wears the original Fiume license plates.

To make the car more suitable to road use, the car was given a large windscreen, bumpers and turn signals. In 1946 Jankovits used the aerodynamic racer to break through the communistic border from Yugoslavia to Italy. They were free but short on money, so they sold their prototype to an Anglo-American soldier.

This Alfa Romeo was rediscovered in England in 1967. It went back to Italy in 2002 and in 2008, the car was restored to its original purpose of a high-speed racer.

SEAT IBE v2 '10
SEAT IBE v2 '10.jpg
The SEAT IBE is an electric concept car that was first presented by the Spanish brand SEAT at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, with a second version being introduced a few months later at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Though it is primarily developed for urban mobility, this compact electric coupé car targets both style and driving dynamics.

The SEAT IBE concept which was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show is a much more polished vehicle than the IBE concept which was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier that year. The compact little IBE looks much better in the rich red paintwork of the Paris concept than the dull grey it featured at Geneva. Also some of the minor elements, like the headlights, taillights and grilles have been revised for the new Paris car.

The IBE is an all-electric zero emission vehicle powered by an electric engine located together with the power electronics beneath the bonnet. With a maximum output of 102 HP and the low weight delivered by intelligent mixed-material construction the IBE is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds and to reach a top speed of 160 km/h.

Jaguar C-XF '07
Jaguar C-XF '07.jpg
The Jaguar C-XF (for Concept-XF) was a concept car that was designed to showcase the preliminary styling cues of the Jaguar XF. The C-XF was unveiled in the 2007 North American International Auto Show with the production XF announced in the autumn of 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The concept borrows from the Mercedes-Benz CLS in that it is a so-called four-door coupe, and it comes with a low roof, raked windshield, high beltline, small greenhouse, and seats for four. Jaguar says the name was chosen to build on name recognition from the XJ and XK models.

The concept features a radically raked coupe roof line that was toned down in the production XF, mainly to give rear-seat passengers some headroom. The cool scorched wood interior trim—done with a blowtorch, which Jaguar design chief Ian Callum said is "very liberating"—wasn't carried over into production, either. Mechanically, the concept gets a 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Jaguar Sequential Shift, that engine produces an output of up to 420 horsepower.

De Tomaso Vallelunga '64
De Tomaso Vallelunga '64.jpg
The Vallelunga is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive sports car produced by De Tomaso from 1964 until 1968. It was De Tomaso's first road-going production model and was named after the Vallelunga Racing Circuit.

The Vallelunga was based on a roadster designed by Carozzeria Fissore, De Tomaso had hoped to sell the design of the concept to another company, but when there were no takers had the car produced by Ghia.

This mid-engined sports car had a 104 hp 1.5 liter Kent engine from Ford, and reached a top speed of 206 km/h. It had an aluminium backbone chassis, which was to become a common feature of De Tomaso cars. The first 5 cars were produced in aluminium while production cars had fibreglass bodywork, the small car weighed 726 kg .

Mooncraft SHI-DEN 77 Coupe '77
Mooncraft SHI-DEN 77 Coupe '77.jpg
The Mooncraft Shiden (also known as 紫電, SHI-DEN or MC/RT-16) is a Japanese Super GTGT300 class prototype race car. The Shiden is a joint venture with a body designed by the Japanese automotive design company Mooncraft and produced by the American racing car manufacturer Riley Technologies.

The original SHI-DEN was made in 1977, for the Fuji Grand Champion Series race, and was called "SHI-DEN 77". The car was a big surprise for the race field for its elegant modern stream-lined body cowl, designed by Takuya Yura.

After loads of wins at GC, Noritake TAKAHARA's next target was racing GC by his original car. The maximum speed was focused on with SHI-DEN as targeting at only Fuji circuit, so it was designed in closed body to achieve less drag. SHI-DEN's chassis was designed by Motoyasu MORIWAKI. Results, however, were not good despite of its elegant appearance.

Beijing Auto Shenbao D60 Aero '14
Beijing Auto Shenbao D60 Aero '14.JPG
The Beijing Auto Shenbao D60 Aero Concept debuted on the 2014 Beijing Auto Show. The D60 Aero Concept previews the Beijing Auto Show D60 that was expected to debut on the show but didn’t really show up. They had one production car standing on a closed-off elevated part of the booth but nobody was allowed near it.

The ‘Aero’ name was a Saab thing, used for their most speedy cars. Beijing Auto got it now. The Beijing Auto Shenbao D60 is based on the old Saab 9-3. Beijing Auto bought the rights to the Saab 9-3 and Saab 9-5 from GM in 2009, and they also bought the rights to the Saab 2.0 turbo and 2.3 turbo.

The D60 Aero Concept is said to be powered by an ex-Saab 2.0 turbo capable of producing up to 210 hp.
