Pagani Zonda C12S 7.3 Roadster '03
Pagani Zonda C12S 7.3 Roadster '03.jpg
In 1999, one car maker decided to challenge the sports car world by building the ultimate exotic. This maker was Pagani. The company founder, an Italian named Horacio Pagani, loved cars and machines, and had been attracted to fast cars since childhood. He even participated in the F3 championship in Argentina in his youth. Why Argentina? Because it was the home country of his childhood hero, Juan Manuel Fangio.

Returning back to Italy and becoming an engineer, Pagani worked on Ferrari and Lamborghini cars using his special knowledge in carbon technology. He took this experience to build a prototype supercar in commemoration of Fangio. This evolved in another project that ultimately became the Zonda.

The radical exotic was powered by a Mercedes-Benz 6.0-liter V-12 that was mounted amidships. It pumped out 389 HP and 420.6 ft-lb of torque, instantly making it a force to be reckoned with. Starting with his favorite carbon monocoque, the manufacturing of parts was completely race oriented, and the suspension was a full-scale pushrod system.

Soon, the C12 evolved into the C12S. The biggest difference in the cars was the body, which was composed entirely of carbon. With AMG working on the engine, displacement increased to 7010 cc, with power upped to 542 HP. In 2003, the C12S saw its engine displacement increased to 7291 cc, thus changing the car's name to C12S 7.3.

Saab 94 Sonett '56
Saab 94 Sonett '56 front.jpg
Saab Sonett is the name of a series of sports cars made by Saab. Built between 1955 to 1957 and again from 1966 to 1974, the Sonetts shared engines and other components with Saab 96s and 95s of the same era.

In the 1950s Rolf Mellde suggested that Saab should make a small number of open-top two seater sport cars as racing regulations did not allow Saab to tune their cars as much as was needed to be competitive. Rolf Mellde designed the car himself and in utter secrecy built it in a barn in Åsaka outside Trollhättan. Only a very limited number of people working on the project knew about it and was done in their spare time. The total cost of the project was 75000 Kronor. The name 'Sonett' is derived from an exclamation in Swedish by Rolf Mellde; "Så nätt den är" ("How neat it is", or more literally "so neat they are"), not from the sonnet type of poetry. The name was originally suggested for both the Saab 92 and the Saab 93.

The Saab Sonett, also called the Super Sport or Saab 94 (later known as Sonett I), was introduced on 16 March 1956 at Stockholm's Bilsalong (motor show). Featuring a three-cylinder two-stroke engine generating 57.5 horsepower (42.9 kW) and a 70 kilograms (150 lb) aluminium box-style chassis from Swedish designer Sixten Sason, the Sonett I was an advanced low-weight 600 kg (1,323 lb) racer based on aircraft design concepts.

With a projected top speed of 120 mph (190 km/h), the Sonett I had the prospect of success on the European race circuit, and a production run of 2,000 units was planned for 1957. However, race competition rules changed, permitting modified production cars into race classes that Saab had envisioned for its purpose-built Sonett, and the economic and marketing viability of the project faded.

Only six Sonett I vehicles were made between 1955 and early 1957, all RHD. The original prototype, known as "#1" and built with a manually crafted glass-reinforced plastic (GRP, or "fiberglass") body, served as the reference model for the other five cars. An extremely rare vehicle, only two Sonetts I exist in the United States; one was in the GM Heritage Center collection.

Dodge Ram SRT-10 '04
Dodge Ram SRT-10 '04 front.jpg
The Dodge Ram SRT-10 is a sport pickup truck produced by Dodge between 2004 and 2006 in limited numbers. It was first introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show, but was not put into production until 2004. Unlike previous Ram trucks, the SRT-10 was built solely for speed.

The Dodge Ram SRT-10 was created by DaimlerChrysler's PVO (Performance Vehicle Operations) division, using Dodge Viper and Plymouth Prowler engineers. Extensive wind tunnel testing was used in styling the exterior of the Ram SRT-10.

The SRT-10 is however not the first time that Dodge has put a Viper engine into a Ram pickup. At the 1996 Chicago Auto Show, Dodge introduced a concept Dodge Ram with a Viper Generation 2 engine, but it was not put into production. The Dodge Ram VTS was painted Banzai Blue with dual white skunk stripes, housed a 8.0 L (488 cid) V10, a six-speed Borg-Warner manual gearbox, and 17-inch (430 mm) Viper GTS wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich 275/60-HR17 Comp T/A HR4 tires.

The SRT-10 featured an 8.3 litres (Chrysler 8.3 L Viper V10) V10.This engine produced 500 bhp (373 kW; 507 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 525 lb·ft (712 N·m) of torque at 4,200 rpm. The regular cab, with a total curb weight of 5,130 lb (2,330 kg), reached a top speed of 154 mph (248 km/h), and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.9 seconds.

In July 2004, a Dodge Ram SRT-10, driven by NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan set both the Guiness World Record and Sport Car Club of America's record for the world's fastest production truck with an average speed of 154.587 mph (248.784 km/h). As of August 2014 it is still the Worlds fastest full size factory pickup truck.

Chevrolet Nomad Super Turbo Fire V8 '57
Chevrolet Nomad Super Turbo Fire V8 '57.jpg
The Chevrolet Nomad was a station wagon model made off and on from 1955 to 1972, and a Chevy Van trim package in the late 1970s and early 1980s, produced by Chevrolet. The Nomad is best remembered in its two-door 1955–57 form, and was considered a halo model during its three-year production as a two-door station wagon.

The two-door Nomad differed from other station wagons of the era by having unique styling more reminiscent of a hardtop sedan than that of a standard station wagon. Chevrolet shared this body with its sister Pontiac, which marketed their version as the Pontiac Safari. The Nomad's unique design had its roots in a General Motors Motorama show car of the same name that was based on the Corvette. The Concept was introduced at the GM Motorama in 1954 as one of Head Stylist Harley Earl's "dream cars". It followed the introduction in 1950 of the Ford Country Squire two door station wagon.

GM approved production of the vehicle if the design could be transferred to its standard model, because top GM brass felt that they could sell more models if it were attached to the popular Bel Air model. In fact, following the product debut in 1955, it was not uncommon for the car to be referred to as the Chevy "Bel Air Nomad".

In 1957, the Nomad's V-8 engine displacement grew to 283 cubic inches (4,638 cc) from 265, with the "Super Turbo Fire V8" option producing 283 horsepower with the help of continuous fuel injection. These so-called "fuelie" cars are quite rare, since most Bel Airs were fitted with carburation. While considered to be a milestone vehicle design, General Motors discontinued the original Nomad Sport Wagon at the end of the 1957 model year due to low sales and the introduction of a new body for 1958.

Maserati Coupé Trofeo Light '04
Maserati Coupé Trofeo Light '04.jpg
The Maserati Coupé and Spyder (Tipo M138) are grand tourers produced by Italian automaker Maserati from 2001 to 2007. They have now been replaced by the GranTurismo. The two nameplates refer to the four-seater coupé and two-seater roadster versions, respectively. Both models were based on the 3200 GT, which was sold in Europe, but not in the United States. Due to the confusing nature of the names "Maserati Coupé" and "Maserati Spyder" (which could refer to any coupé or convertible Maserati has made) the Coupé and Spyder are both commonly referred to as the 4200 GT, which is an evolution of the prior model name and a reference to the increase in engine displacement from 3.2 L (3217 cc) to 4.2 L (4244 cc). The Spyder was first unveiled to the public at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show with the Coupé's debut following shortly thereafter at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show. The Coupé and Spyder were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, who also designed the Maserati Ghibli.

The Maserati Trofeo Light is produced by the racing department at Modena, in collaboration with Italtecnica and is a development of the road-going Coupe Cambiocorsa. This version is considerably lighter (1150 Kg dry weight,) thanks in part to the use of composite materials for the bodywork, with substantial aerodynamic modifications. It has a front splitter and adjustable rear wing, while the wheel arches have been widened. The suspension has been completely revised with a new structure and tubular steel arms. The performance of the 4244 cc 90 degree V8 engine has been increased and now puts out 430 horsepower at 7000 rpm.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Zagato '86
Aston Martin V8 Vantage Zagato '86 front.jpg
When Aston Martin needed a competitive version of their GT racer, the DB4 GT, they turned to Zagato. The Italian coach builder specialized in constructing light weight, slippery bodies, ideally suited for racing needs. Although the finished product was not the competition success hoped for, its rarity and stunning looks have made the DB4 GT Zagato one of the most sought after Aston Martin models. Some twenty years later Aston Martin and Zagato teamed up once again to relive the success had with the DB4. The plan was to build a limited edition Zagato bodied version of the V8 Vantage model.

Both companies officially announced the plans at the 1985 Geneva Motorshow, where a first sketch was shown of the new car. After the Zagato treatment the V8 Vantage was set to be smaller, lighter and capable of a top speed of over 300 km/h. Production was limited to only 50 examples, which made the competition look like common cars. Long before the actual design was completed, Aston Martin had received the down payments for the complete run. Actually the demand pushed the prices up to many times the 70,000 Pounds sticker; the market expected to see a similar surge in prices as seen on the DB4 GT Zagato.

All seemed well, until testing proved that the new Fuel Injection version of the V8 engine would not be powerful enough to meet the 300 km/h goal set. This was relatively easily fixed by equipping the engine with Weber Carburetors again, but this made the engine substantially taller. Unfortunately there was no space under the aerodynamic Zagato body to house this engine, so the team either had to accept the lower top speed or modify the engine cover to fit the engine. The latter was opted for, resulting in an enormous bulge on the bonnet, which was not liked by all customers.

From here on the good news continues; the V8 Vantage Zagato was 10% lighter and considerably shorter, resulting in a much better handling car. Zagato were well known for their controversial styling and especially with the 'power bulge', the Vantage's body was no exception. It was a complete departure from the regular V8 design and was exceptionally aerodynamic with a drag figure of just 0.29 cd. The finished product is easily recognizable as a Zagato design by the trademark 'double bubble' roof and the various badges fitted all around the car.

A year after the official announcement, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Zagato was unveiled at the 1986 Geneva Motorshow. Production was limited to two cars per month and lasted to 1988. Sadly many were picked up by investors, who stored them waiting for the prices to go up even further, making the V8 Vantage Zagato an exceptionally rare sight. Peak prices were reached around 1989, when examples sold for 500,000 Pounds. Perhaps it's poetic justice, but all those who bought their Zagatos as an investment were let down, with today's prices down to the original 70,000 Pounds again.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it is safe to say that Aston Martin's V8 Vantage Zagato has a very striking and controversial design, iconic for the 1980s. What those investors missed was the real point of the Vantage Zagato, it is a true driving machine. The heavy diet and revised suspension made it one of the fastest and best handling cars ever constructed by Aston Martin, a true successor to the legendary DB4 GT Zagato.
