Lexus LFA '10
Lexus LFA '09.jpg
20 years before Japan's automotive industry was truly recognized by the world, Toyota created a sports car called the 2000GT, which brought together the newest technology of the 1960s. And today in the 21st century, Toyota has again created a cutting edge sports car: the LFA.

Its development was not easy, having to start from the establishment of production techniques for the carbon fiber body. One of the most important factors of a sports car, the front rear weight distribution, is 48 to 52; the trans-axle layout and the radiator mounted in the rear helped achieve this figure. The vehicle weight was suppressed to 1480 Kg. And the development team put even more emphasis on lowering the center of gravity, utilizing a dry-sump lubrication system for the V10 engine, and going as far as to position the driveshaft a bit higher by adding a reduction gear, so that the entire mounting of the power train could be lower.

The 4.8-liter V10 has a bank angle of 72 degrees, and it redlines at 9500 rpm, the 552 HP power equates to 115 HP per liter. The transmission utilizes a 6-speed 2-pedal MT, which shifts at 0.2 seconds, on par with the world's top racing machines. The brakes are standardly equipped with ceramic disks, with 6-pot calipers in the front and 4-pot calipers in the rear, all with varying piston sizes. 100 km/h acceleration is just 3.7 seconds, with a top speed of 325 km/h, and the car is a limited production of only 500 cars worldwide.

Dodge Charger R/T Concept '99
Dodge Charger RT concept '99.jpeg
In 1999 Dodge debuted a new Dodge Charger R/T concept car. It took many styling cues from the 1960s Chargers (most notably the second generation) but also had four doors. The designers attempted to blend the rear doors into the design so they would not be noticed very easily. Compressed natural gas was purported as being in the lineup for a possible fuel source.

This concept Charger R/T, while sharing the long nose and rearward cab of the original, is a good deal shorter. It's 187 inches in overall length compared to 203 inches for the 1966 Charger. It's also lighter; 1,361 kg versus 1,656 kg. While making an important statement for CNG technology, the Charger R/T was equally appealing to the design community. It had functional side scoops, as does the Dodge Viper, and the chrome plated, central mounted exhaust was somewhat reminiscent of the Viper. It even has functional air exhausters sculpted into its rear fascia.

The Charger R/T is equally important for what it says about CNG technology. The concept car showcases a new storage tank system that one day might deliver 300 miles range in a CNG-powered passenger car and not compromise storage space in the trunk.

The cylinders, or pressure cells, inside the Fiberglas storage tank are lined with a gas-impermeable High Density Polyurethane (HDPE) thermoplastic and wrapped in a hybrid mix of high-strength carbon and super-tough glass filaments that are wound with an epoxy resin. Finally, the cylinders are laid into a foam egg crate to absorb impacts. It's strong for its weight, resistant to environmental damage, reliable and durable. The tank can be made flat, in the shape of a conventional gasoline tank, yet the fuel can still be stored at 3,600 pounds per square inch.

Renault Sport Clio V6 Phase 2 '02
Renault Sport Clio V6 Phase 2 '02.jpg
Renault wanted to build the ultimate hot hatch from the second-gen Clio. And to do so, the company wanted to install a V-6 into the compact car. There wasn't enough room to accommodate such a large power under the hood, so the rear seats were removed, and in its place sat a 3.0-liter V-6 mounted amidships.

This powerplant is the same found in the company's upscale model, the Laguna. It produces 230 HP/6000 rpm and an immersive 221.3 ft-lb of torque at 3750 rpm. Shifting is performed via a 6-speed manual gearbox. The big power made the Clio Renault Sport V6 the prototypical "point and squirt" car because it possessed both excellent acceleration, especially at the low end of the rpm spectrum, and remarkable nimbleness.

The suspension system consisted of specially designed struts, and when combined with the grip provided by its wide tires - 205/50R17 up front and 235/45R17 at rear - the little Renault stuck the road surface through corners. That the Lutecia performed as well as it did was amazing given that Renault transformed an FF (Front-engine, Front drive) into an MR (Mid-engine, Rear drive).

A slightly redesigned Clio Renault Sport V6 appeared at the Paris Motor Show in October 2002, featuring larger 18-in. wheels. Power for the engine was bumped up to 255 HP/7150 rpm and 221.3 ft-lb of torque. The suspension geometry was also revised, and, when combined with an additional subframe at the rear, the car handled better than the original.

Ferrari F430 '06
Ferrari F430 '06.jpg
When one utters the phrase "entry-level cars," it's usually meant to describe an inexpensive automobile whose sole purpose is to get people from Point A to Point B. But when you're talking about Ferrari, all conventional definitions go out the proverbial window.

Replacing Ferrari's "entry-level" 360 Modena in 2004 was the F430. The car's styling was mesmerizing, with flowing lines influenced by the company's legendary Formula 1 racers and Le Mans prototypes of the 1960s.

Mounted amidships was a sweet-sounding V8 powerplant. Unlike the 360 Modena's engine, which evolved from that of the 1973 Ferrari 308 GT4, the F430's 4.3-liter naturally aspirated unit was completely new. Output was impressive, as it was rated at 483 HP/8,500 rpm, eclipsing the output of the legendary F40's turbocharged V8. It came mated to a high-tech new twin-clutch transmission that allowed the driver to manually select gears via paddles on the steering wheel.

The F430's chassis was a heavily reworked version of the 360 Modena's that featured a frame composed of extruded and forged aluminum. Part of the structure was altered to meet new, more stringent collision safety standards, and the floor board was made of an exceptionally strong aluminum alloy used in aerospace called extra super duralumin. With available carbon-ceramic brake rotors and a top speed of 314 km/h, the Ferrari F430, whose base price was about $180,000, was perhaps the most desirable "entry-level" car in the world.

Factory Five 818C '15
Factory Five 818C '15.jpg
Factory Five Racing is a California-based company which has been a front-runner in custom kit cars and hot rods for quite some time. The company designed and built its own complete car called the 818 using drivetrain components from a Subaru WRX (The 2006 WRX is preferred, due to a one-year-only combination of aluminum suspension parts and bigger brakes.) Subaru loyalists might prefer to start with a WRX STI, given its six-speed transmission and stronger engine, but that car's electronically controlled center differential cannot be easily adapted to mid-engine duty.

In 2015 the 818 was introduced at the 2015 Factory Five Racing Open House with a removable hardtop as well as some other refinements, aside from the removable hard top, this newest Factory Five model featured a more modern look to the exterior than its predecessor and also gained power windows, rear glass corner windows, and a rear glass hatch. The front end has also been refashioned with new fenders and a front grille insert. These additions added $2500 to the price previously attached to the 818. It is possible to outfit earlier 818 models with the 818C’s new nose design and hard top with a special kit.

Auto Union 1000 Sp Coupé '58
Auto Union 1000 Sp Coupé '58.jpg
The Auto Union 1000 was a compact front-wheel-drive automobile manufactured by Auto Union GmbH between 1958 and 1965. It was the first (and in many markets the last) model branded as an Auto Union by the manufacturer since the 1930s: it replaced the paradoxically named DKW 3=6.

Appearing in 1958 was the Auto Union 1000 Sp, a low-slung two-seater sports car that was produced for Auto Union by the Stuttgart coach builders, Baur. The fixed-head version was joined in 1961 by a cabriolet. Adorned with tail fins, the stylish modern look of the car gave rise to the "baby Thunderbird" (schmalspur Thunderbird) soubriquet in the press, and belied the fact that it was, under the skin, another Auto Union 1000, albeit one with an increased compression ratio and a claimed maximum of 55 hp to place on the road.

The 1000 Sp was lower but not (assuming only two people were in the car) significantly lighter than the standard-bodied saloon: a claimed maximum speed of 140 km/h nevertheless put its performance at the top of the range. It would prove to be the last open top car produced by the company until the Audi 80 cabriolet in 1994.

Mazda RX-01 '95
Mazda RX-01 '95.jpg
Unveiled at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show the Mazda RX-01 was a proposal for the next generation Mazda RX-7 sports car.

The styling of the RX-01 carried over the same flowing, rounded curves found on the third generation RX-7. But the RX-01 incorporated some extra features such as slim LED headlights and an integrated front spoiler which helped increase downforce over the front axle while also helping to channel air into the engine.

Despite outside appearances the interior of the Mazda RX-01 concept actually featured four seats, although the rear seats were practically useless. The seats and centre console were trimmed in black leather and contrasting red trim was used heavily throughout to enhance the sporting feel - although by todays standards it looks rather dated.

Power for the RX-01 came from a 220 horsepower, 1.3 litre Wankel rotary engine which was mounted up front. However due to the engines compact size Mazda's engineers were able to position the powerplant further back and lower than in a conventional front engined car. This location meant that the weight distribution was more balanced and the handling improved.

While it was hoped by enthusiasts that the RX-01 would be put into production as the next iteration of Mazda's rotary sports car and made available to world markets, the declining interest in sports car over SUVs and Mazda's financial state at the time conspired to keep RX-01 merely a concept car. However, the RX-01 did pave the way for the Mazda RX-Evolv concept which would eventually become the RX-8.

Tauro Sport Auto V8 Spider '12
Tauro Sport Auto V8 Spider '12.jpg
Tauro Sport Auto is a Spanish manufacturer of luxury sports cars based in Valladolid, founded in 2010, when a group of Spanish businessmen joined with a British manufacturer of racing cars to create the company.

In the summer of 2012 the Spanish manufacturer announced the limited production Tauro V8 Spider, the V8 Spider takes us back to the traditional formula of front engine and rear wheel drive that defines the pure roadster.

Under the hood is GM's latest LS3 V8. Displacing just under 6.2 litre, the all-aluminium unit produces around 440 hp in standard trim. Tauro Sport Auto also offers higher performance version with 480 hp and ultimately 530 hp on tap. A close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox with a limited slip differential comes as standard, while an automatic is available as option.

The rolling chassis is tightly wrapped in a bespoke body, which offers just enough room to seat two. The design is unique but does incorporate cues from some of the great roadsters of the past. The car boasts a conventional, fabric foldable roof. The V8 Spider has a kerb weight of 1350 kg, with a near perfect balance of 53% over the front and 47% over the rear axle.

Opel GT '68
Opel GT '68.jpg
First presented as a styling exercise in 1965 at the Paris and Frankfurt motor shows, production of the Opel GT began in 1968 and continued until 1973 with a total of 103,463 examples being produced. It relied partly on components from the contemporary Opel Kadett B and had a body made by French contractor Brissonneau & Lotz. Its styling has been likened to the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette which went on sale in September 1967, which in turn was styled after the 1964 Pontiac Banshee.

The standard engine was the 1.1-liter OHV four-cylinder engine that produced 67 horsepower (SAE). An optional 1.9-liter engine was offered and was the choice of most buyers. Horsepower with this option rose to just over 100 (SAE). The standard gearbox was a four-speed gearbox but a three-speed unit was available with the 1.9-liter engine. The engine was mounted in the front and sent power to the rear wheels. The chassis was constructed of a steel unibody construction. The front suspension was a double A-arms and transverse leaf springs while the rear was comprised of coil springs and a live axle. Disc brakes could be found in the front and drums in the rear.

Aston Martin Ogle Sotheby Special '72
Aston Martin Ogle Sotheby Special '72.jpg
This unusual Aston Martin was first shown at the Montreal Motor Show in January 1972. The idea behind it came from David Ogle in the 1960's but it wasn't until after his death that the project really evolved to a finished car. With the cost of the car being met by the tobacco company, W.O.Wills, the car was designed and built during 1971 under the guidance of Tom Karen. The car was known as 'The Sotheby Special' and finished in dark blue with gold pinstripes in order to promote the cigarette brand that Wills had just introduced. As the brand failed, the car was repainted in the 'Embassy' colours of white with a logo of red triangles.

The Sotheby Special was based on an Aston Martin DBS V8 chassis (DBSV8/10380/R), with outrageous 1970s glassfibre coachwork supported on a Reynolds 531 tubular steel frame. The entire ‘glasshouse’ is in Perspex. Under the bonnet lies an early prototype Aston Martin V8. A striking feature of the rear of the car is the strip of 22 rear lights. The harder the driver pressed the brake pedal the more lights were lit up.

A second, fully functioning car was manufactured for promotional duties (later to be repainted in Embassy colours for use by Graham Hill’s Grand Prix team) and a third commissioned by a private individual who, once seeing the car on BBC TV’s Tomorrow’s World, simply had to have one, even at a cost in 1973 of £28,750. At the time the standard V8 Saloon was listed at £8,749.
