Lotus Carlton '90
Lotus Carlton '90.jpg
It's a question that could come up on a quiz show, "What was the world's fastest sedan in 1990?" Chances are you'd get it wrong because it was actually the Lotus Carlton. You wouldn't guess it by just looking at it, but this benign 4-door had the heart of a beast.

The Lotus Carlton was based on the Vauxhall Carlton 3.0 GSi 24V, the British version of the Opel Omega. In order to develop this mass-production family sedan into a machine capable of taking on the likes of the BMW M5 and Mercedes E500, Vauxhall entrusted the development of the high-performance version to its neighbors at Lotus.

Lotus engineers virtually rebuilt the Carlton from the ground up. The displacement of the car's 3.0-liter inline-6 was increased to 3.6 liters. Also, they swapped the pistons and crankshaft, converted the engine head to a 4-valves-per-cylinder design, and bolted on two Garrett T25 turbochargers. The normal 5-speed manual gearbox was changed to the same 6-speed manual used in the Corvette ZR1. The result was 376 HP and 411.1 ft-lb of torque. Combine that with its 1,655-kg curb weight, and you had a car that went from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, dashed to the 1,312.3 gt (400m) mark in 13.5 and boasted a top speed of 282 km/h. The suspension system was improved, too, enabling the car to corner as efficiently as it went straight.

Ferrari 860 Monza '56
Ferrari 860 Monza '56.jpg
Originally developed for the all-conquering Ferrari 500 F2 single seater, the Aurelio Lampredi designed straight four was briefly among Ferrari's most widely used sports car engines during the early 1950s. Following several prototypes raced by the works team in 1953, two production racers were launched in 1954; the 500 Mondial and 750 Monza, equipped with respectively a two- and three-litre version of the 'four'.

In a quest for even more power and torque, Ferrari's engineers continued the development of the four-cylinder engine. By 1955 its maximum displacement of just over 3.4 litre was achieved by boring and stroking the light alloy block to 102 mm and 105 mm respectively. That was almost twice the size of the two-litre original, which featured a more modest bore and stroke of 90 mm and 78 mm. The big 'four' a unitary displacement of 857.98 cc.

Known as the 'Tipo 129', the 1955 specification engine did follow the design of Lampredi's original, first raced back in 1952. Both the block and head were constructed from light alloy. The beautifully sculpted head featured twin overhead camshafts and could accommodate for two plugs per cylinder. The engine was fed by two massive twin-choke Weber carburettors. All this helped the Tipo 129 produce around 280 hp and close to 400 Nm of torque.

In good Ferrari tradition, the new four cylinder racer was named after its unitary displacement, so the car was known as the 857 S or Sport. One of the main reasons the 857 Sport was only briefly used by the Scuderia was that it was quickly followed by the 860 Monza. This used the same Tipo 129 engine but now in combination with the Tipo 520 chassis also used by the V12-engined 290 MM. Compared to the earlier design, the new chassis featured tubular reinforcements bringing it closer to a 'spaceframe' design. Another change was the adoption of a sturdier four-speed gearbox. Only three 860 Monzas were built, one of which was later converted to 290 MM specification.

Bertone Mantide '09
Bertone Mantide '09.jpg
First unveiled in 2009 over a series of YouTube videos known simply as Project M, The Bertone Mantide is a design study based on the Corvette ZR1.

The Mantide has better performance figures than the ZR1, due in part to its highly advanced aerodynamics and significant weight savings. The overall vehicle weight has been reduced with using carbon fibre for all body panels, interior trim, seats and even the wheels. The Mantide weights at 1420 kg.

The Bertone Mantide has a 638 hp supercharged 6,162 cc V8 engine that produces 604 lb·ft of torque at 3800 rpm. The aerodynamic results are excellent, with drag reduced by 25% (Cd 0.298) and a 30% improvement over the ZR1 in down force. The performances are exciting, 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 351 km/h.

Vaydor G35 '13
Vaydor G35 '13.jpg
Not to be confused with the Star Wars villain with a similar sounding name, Vaydor Bodykits LLC produces a truly unique body kit which takes old Infiniti G35s and converts them into faux-exotic cars. The finished car ends up with European supercar styling, but without the pricetag.

Underneath the modified body is an Infiniti G35 Coupe (2003-2007) as a donor car, the installation of the Vaydor body kit doesn’t require any changes to the wiring or major mechanical components. In fact, its maker even says “You can leave the car running with the air on while building it.”

The Vaydor Package holds: main rear body shell, front clip (fenders and bumper), door outers, inners and braces, hood skin and inner, gas filler bucket, side roof rails, lower rocker splitters, after-door vents, fender vents, lower windshield cover, three rear exit vents, rear floating wing, front lower splitter, 8-point roll cage, DOT headlights, center tail light, "Lambo" door hinges, hood hinges and latches, and a complete leather and suede conversion in the color of your choice for the interior.

Brokernet Silver Sting '06
Brokernet Silver Sting '06.jpg
Hungary, located in central Europe, is not known for anything related to the automotive world, but a few car nuts are trying to change all that. International GT Racer Kalman Bodis and his team, Bovi Motorsport, chose the 2006 Luxusautó Show held in Budapest, Hungary, to show off their creation, the Brokernet Silver Sting. Hungarian financial company Brokernet is the main sponsor of the car and as such the Silver Sting bears the company name.

7 years in the making, the Brokernet Silver Sting was designed by Zoltan Peredy. Being built by a race car driver, intentions for the Silver Sting were clear. This car was not meant to be taken to elegant car shows, it was meant to get out there and race. Bodis planned to use this car in various GT races throughout the world and planned to show everyone that Hungary is capable of producing a world class car.

The Brokernet Silver Sting is powered by a 3.6 litre, flat 6 cylinder from a Porsche 911 GT3. The engine develops 432 hp @ 7000 rpm and 437 Nm of torque @ 6500 rpm. With a total weight of just 1100 kg, the Brokernet Silver Sting gets to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG '04
Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG '04.jpg
The name CL stands for the German Coupé Leicht (Coupé-Light) or Coupé Luxusklasse (Coupé-Luxury). The CL-Class is the coupé derivative of the S-Class full-size luxury saloon, upon which it shares the same platform. Formerly known as the SEC (Sonderklasse-Einspritzmotor-Coupé) and later S-Coupé, it was spun off into its own, separate name in 1996 and in 1997 for North American markets.

The second generation of the CL is the W215-chassis coupé of 1999–2006. It is based on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220), though it rides on an 8-inch shorter wheelbase. The CL's front fascia of four oval headlights is similar to that of the W210 and W211 E-Class. The CL was offered as four models with one of them being the V12 Bi-Turbo CL65 AMG.

The CL65 AMG engine was based on the 12-cylinder unit of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In addition to an increase in displacement from 5513 to 5980 cubic centimetres, numerous other modifications were responsible for the output and torque increase in the CL65 AMG. The AMG engineers have increased the charge pressure of the Turbochargers to a maximum of 1.5 bar. In addition they have used forged pistons, main and big-end bearings made from extremely high temperature and pressure-resistant materials and enlarged the apertures in the injection nozzles to achieve a higher fuel flow. Thanks to twin Turbocharging this engine develops 612 bhp and makes a remarkable 1000 Newton meters of torque available from 2000 rpm. Power is transferred by a five-speed automatic transmission with the Speedshift function and steering-wheel gearshift.

McLaren MP4-12C '13
McLaren MP4-12C '13.jpg
Following in the footsteps of the McLaren F1 with its ultimate performance, and the SLR McLaren with Mercedes Benz, the third McLaren supercar was given the name MP4, as if to remind one of its relationship with F1 machines. As with the revolutionary MP4 F1 car that introduced carbon composite bodies to F1 racing back in 1981, the major point of note in this car is the one-piece carbon composite "mono-cell" tub used in its structure.

The weight of the mono-cell alone is just 80 kg and contributes greatly to weight reduction. In the front and rear of the mono-cell is is an aluminum frame to which the engine and suspension are assembled.

The midship-mounted engine is a 3.8L V8 twin turbo, with a maximum out put of 592 HP. In 2012 McLaren announced a small number of improvements and the engine now produceed 616 hp, this power output has become standard on the 2013 model. The displacement and power specifications may perhaps appear to be surprisingly modest for a McLaren road car. However its performance is nothing short of incredible, as it boasts a top speed of over 352 km/h, 0-100 km/h acceleration of approximately 2.8 seconds.

The brakes utilize the air brake system also used on the SLR McLaren, that has been further refined. The 7 speed dual clutch system is given the name "Seamless Shift Gearbox", much like the F1 machines, and incorporates six preset driving modes. The electronically controlled suspension is set up as a 4 wheel double wishbone configuration, and it is also notable that the front-rear-left-right dampers are connected hydraulically for ride comfort.

Toyota iQ GRMN Supercharger '12
Toyota iQ GRMN Supercharger '12.png
Designed at the Toyota European Design and Development studio in Nice, France, the iQ is a transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive city car. The name iQ, an initialism of the term intelligence quotient, recalls a competitor, the Smart Fortwo.

Toyota's motorsports and performance partner GAZOO Racing developed a sporty edition of the iQ minicar, GAZOO Racing decided to see what happens when they toss a supercharger on a Toyota iQ with the optional 1.33-liter engine. The end result is a super-lightweight car that pumps out an impressive 128 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 174 Nm (128 pound-feet) of torque at 4,800 rpm in a compact package. This means that the supercharger added a full 35 horsepower and 56 Nm (41 pound-feet) of torque.

In addition to a supercharger, GAZOO Racing included an updated suspension and transmission. Also added in were 4-wheel disc brakes, allowing its driver to bring this micro-machine to a halt quickly. The iQ GRMN Supercharger was available exclusively in Japan in a limited run of just 100 units.
