AMD has shown a very clever solution to deal with large data buffers, by showing a prototype of a Radeon Pro card with an M2 interface and 1TB of memory.
Maybe this is not really needed right now, but to play 8K video (7680x4320, that is 4x UHD) you need some serious memory to play. Normally the system ram is used for that.
The CPU is completely bypassed.
In a demonstration they showed smooth playback at 90fps, while without the added M2 the same file ran at only 17fps.
Maybe this is not really interesting for consumers right now, but stereoscopic 4K or 8K are in development and will come to the PC sooner or later.
