Why do we play games? And why do some gamers feel compelled to achievement hunt until they collect everything?
"The Game Theorists" teams up with Jirard and Greg from "The Completionist" to unlock what compels us to play games, why video games are addictive, and the psychology behind achievement hunters.

Why are we gamers ?
I have always been hooked, not for achievements so much as just the fun of playing. Started well before video games were even out. Pinball and those old hockey puck type bowling games were my first fun with gaming, both were a dime back then to play and I was maybe 7 - 10 yrs old. First computer games were played on the 5 1/4" floppies. No hard drive until the early 80's and my first was 20MB, didn't know what I was going to do with all the space. Then there were the arcades where there were 50 to 100 machines all wanting your quarters. Game on!

In fact the reason I began gaming (at an early age, 4 or 5) was because of a form of Self-Actualization needs. My community and achievement needs were satisfied by school, but finding myself, dealing with pain and various emotions that were caused by trauma and stress drove me to gaming, to a vast multitude of worlds where I could place myself into the position of a Hero. Overtime, it shaped me, and even allowed me to analyze my true self, fulfilling the need of Self-Actualization. It continues to this day as a form of psycho-therapy and pure enjoyment.
In gaming, I was drawn to things where I could be whatever I wanted, play righteous heroes, or even just derp around for fun. Anything that would take my mind away from the reoccurring pain was welcome, even games that required an immense level of skill. Point being, I was less completionist, and more attached to the games for whatever amount of release I gained from them.

They have made me who I am. I am introverted, so i'm not sociable tbh. Games help me overcome this, by talking to new ppl. Its my way of socialising.
I also like to play games alone, like RDR because it is fun. I just get enjoyment out of things like this because i feel like i am immersed in a place/time period which has more heritage than modern day.

A second video explaining why we are gamers was released, and also don't you dare to say "because we like to play".

Lol, but what if that is just true? Simple explanations are sometimes the bestTsukishima wrote: also don't you dare to say "because we like to play".
In Games every "grown-up" can be a kid again. Although i think that not everyone is a grown up after all, not even the ones that claim to be.
Never grow up
