No you don't need to be online to play games, but you will need to be connected to the Internet to use all the other features.

Who buys a console purely for aesthetics though? It isn't the best but I wouldn't call it a deal-breaker.

Well I hate to break the bubble, but it IS a dealbreaker don't forget MS placed the ONE as an entertainment system in the market that is prominent in your living (MS own words)... IF that is the case the estetics are important.

I kind of like the look of it; it's nice and simple.
But anyways, it's what's inside that counts. And if you're using it for its intended purpose then you shouldn't really be looking at it too much.
