Another qualifying, another pole for Lewis. Nr 72 and probably not his last. He gives himself the best possible position to win the race on Sunday. But eager Vettel is next to him on the grid. And Ferrari's in the first corner have a tendency to be just a little wider than they really are lately. Must be a compensating thing
Raikkonen and Ricciardo had the exact same time, but Ricciardo set it first, so he is 4th and Kimi 5th.
Red Bull has caught up with Ferrari and Renault has given all their 3 teams 1 new engine. This also means that grid penalties are given. Max gets 15 places. They picked Austin to take the penalties, as it is a good place to overtake and it suits the Red Bull well.
Pierre Gasly must be annoyed, as the races in Suzuka were cancelled due to heavy weather conditions. His replacement Hartley did well during free practices by keeping up with Kvyatt. But in qualifying he came short.
That can not be said from Sainz, who outqualified Hulkenberg in their first encounter. Hulkenberg has to start from the back of the grid as well (engine change), so did not really bother to set a good time, but Sainz will see it as 1-0 for him.
Alonso managed to get his McLaren in the top 10, by driving a perfect lap in Q2, leaving Vandoorne 0.6 sec behind.
Ericsson outqualified Wehrlein for a change and Magnussen was more in the way than improving his own times. Stroll blocked Grosjean in a ridiculous manner. Both drivers were penalized for their track behavior. Stroll and Magnussen really need to use their mirrors better. It can lead to potential dangerous situations if they don't
