Volkswagen Tarek '03
Volkswagen Tarek '03.jpg
Created as part of Volkswagen's racing programme, the Tarek was developed as a sports car designed specifically for rallies. It made its debut in the 2003 Paris-Dakar race.

The name Tarek, the road in English, comes from the Arab language. For Volkswagen, it is more than just the name of the competition car. For its debut in modern-day cross country rallying, the company has set initial ambitions that are to be achieved with a specially designed vehicle concept. 'The decision for a rear-wheel driven buggy is the most efficient concept that could be achieved in the short period of time between the start of our project and the Dakar rally', says Rudolf-Helmut Strozyk, head of Volkswagen Racing. 'A buggy is a light-weight tubular construction. This rigid and reliable basis is an excellent testing facility for our TDI®-technology. Moreover, it is the first opportunity for the entire crew to get to know the geographical conditions in the world's toughest cross country event.'

While the Tarek made its world debut as the actual competition car at the Essen Motor Show, November 28, the design-team of Italdesign - Giugiaro S.p.A., based in Moncalieri near Turin, continued preparation of the other two cars. 'The experience of our tests in Morocco fled directly into the preparation of the two further Tareks', the head of Volkswagen Racing says. During an initial test in North-Africa in November, Jutta Kleinschmidt, Stéphane Henrard and Dieter Depping racked up some 3,000 kilometres with the buggy. In a further, shorter test in December, the team has been successfully testing the more efficient engine cooling system over some 1,500 kilometres.'

In all test sessions, the buggy, prepared to the T2 regulations set out by motorsport's governing body, the FIA, proved to be rigid, reliable and thus competitive right away. The 1180 kg light prototype with its carbonfibre bodywork is based on a steel tubular chassis and is powered by a 218 hp strong 1.9 litre Volkswagen four-cylinder TDI-engine. While the spectacular bodywork and the chassis structure were only completed a few months prior to the Dakar Rally, the TDI®-powerplant in several different varieties already got its baptism of fire in motorsport. "The TDI®-technology has already been tested in various motorsport activities, among others during the Dakar Rally", Rudolf-Helmut Strozyk explains.

Italdesign Namir '09
Italdesign Namir '09.jpg
Namir is a concept car born of the collaboration between Italdesign Giugiaro and Frazer-Nash, a company specialized in the design, construction, and marketing of hybrid systems deeply rooted in the historical automotive manufacturing company founded in England by Archie Frazer-Nash in 1923.

Presented during the 79th edition of the International Motor Show in Geneva, Namir represents the turning of a new page in the book being written by the Torino-based firm since 2004, opening with the Alessandro Volta project and followed up with the commemorative dream car - Quaranta - the result of research and development on sports cars fuelled by hybrid systems produced last year in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the company's founding.

The Arabian name Namir, meaning "tiger", sums up the main features of the concept car: elegance and power, aggressiveness and litheness of lines. Without any doubt it is a sports car: a coupé with two bucket seats and an accurate equilibrium between style and mechanics, aesthetics and contents. The sophisticated mechanics as well as the avant-garde electric and electronics systems are wrapped up into an aggressive package with an exquisitely balanced proportion of volumes and a stunning contrast between the sharp accents of the rear end and the sinuous front lines that emphasise this supercar's performance: over 300 km/h at maximum speed and an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and from 0 to 200km/h in 10.4 seconds, making this the fastest hybrid car in the world.

Namir is also an ecological vehicle. The hybrid system developed together with Frazer-Nash combines an 814 cc endothermic rotary engine with four electric motors, guaranteeing autonomy of 39 km with one litre of fuel CO2 emissions of less than 60 grams per km travelled.

Namir is not merely an exercise in style in and of itself, but rather a fully developed project followed in each and every phase by the Torino-based firm: chassis, body, and mechanical layout were designed and constructed by the Engineering Division, the exterior and interior style was entrusted to the Italdesign Giugiaro Style Centre, while the electrical and electronic elements were developed in collaboration with Frazer-Nash.

The prototype was built entirely in the Italdesign Giugiaro plant.

"The encounter with Frazer-Nash dates back to about a year ago" explains Fabrizio Giugiaro, Vice President and Styling Director of Italdesign Giugiaro, "and it was a pleasure to meet with a name that has made automobile history. Since the early 1990s, Frazer-Nash has taken the lead in the engineering and construction of hybrid systems for vehicles; they were very interested in our branch of research dedicated to hybrid systems applied to sports vehicles and, a few months ago, contacted us about collaborating with them in developing a product that would be able to showcase the potential of their systems. Frazer-Nash then began concentrating on the development of a fuel, traction, and transmission system bespoke for Namir, while the talents and expertise of Italdesign Giugiaro were exploited for the interior styling, planning, engineering and mechanics. It certainly was an interesting and profitable collaboration that resulted in a unique vehicle with very exciting performance levels in terms of speed and pick-up, above all in terms of low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions".

Alfa Romeo/Sbarro Diva '06
Sbarro Diva '06.jpg
The most beautiful surprise at the Geneva Motor Show 2006 is unquestionably the Alfa Romeo Diva. An interesting sketch was unveiled a few days before the exhibition openned, but the Diva is proving to be much more successful "for real" than on paper. This car is the result of collaboration between Wolfgang Egger (Head of the Centro Stile Alfa), the research center of the Fiat group and Franco Sbarro. The car was designed by Egger himself and was carried out by Sbarro and Espera students.

The style of the body evoke a nostalgic past (including the beautiful Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale), but without falling into the easy neo-retro design. The cart had gullwing doors and LED headlamps. The front came directly from Formula 1. All gives a face resolutely modern and sporty. The rear is much more retro, with two large round lights. The dual exhaust central position in height is superb and gives a note of originality. This gives a compact car, which boasts a robust and strong personality. Success at any point of view. Inside, it is very spartan.

The 290 hp 3.2-liter V6 mid-engined came from an Alfa Romeo 147 GTA. The drivetrains are nothing less than the Ferrari F430. Not bad! Last precision, the weight is well content with 1100 kg. This gives a weight/power ratio of 3.79 kg/hp (for comparison, a BMW M3 had 4.35 kg/hp). The performance should be "interesting". The car, however, has certainly not been tested before the Genva Motor Show. Indeed, Espera students were forced to make a race against time to be ready in time. This explains a few details that reveal the speed.

The Espera Sbarro Diva is one of the most beautiful cars designed by Espera. Such success does not deserve one thing: to become a model for small series at Alfa Romeo. Dream...
www.italiaspeed.com wrote:The Espera Sbarro automotive design school has presented a radical concept car in Geneva designed in tribute to the Alfa Romeo brand. The concept is based on the theme of “interpreting Alfa’s glorious history”, and is being displayed at the prestigious show as a fully operational prototype.
Designed as a mid-engined sports coupe, the concept is far more extreme than anything that comes out of Alfa Romeo’s own Centro Stile. Included on the Sbarro show car is an interesting approach to the front spoiler, incorporating an aerofoil positioned across the nose, broken only by the traditional Alfa Romeo ‘scudetto’ grille. The nose section will also feature large individual scoops for cooling the front brakes, as well as spoilers moulded into the bottom of each fender.
The concept car also incorporates gull wing doors, the top section of which being fabricated totally from glass, separated only by a central beam to provide an H pattern when viewed from above. Generous rear intakes, similar in shape to those on the Ferrari Enzo, feed air to the transversely-mounted Alfa Romeo 'Arese' 3.2-litre V6
In typical fashion, the Sbarro Diva concept sportscar was only completed just in time to be presented at the Geneva Motor Show. The Espera Sbarro training centre, located in Pontarlier, France, offers a full-blown automotive design course, where the students are invited to discover the different aspects of the trade: sketching, polyester bodywork, modelling, moulding, general mechanics, automotive mechanics, chassis design, etc.
The course, which takes place over several months of the year, is open to all highly motivated individuals above the age of eighteen, with a passion for automotive design. With over forty years of experience, Franco Sbarro has created numerous concept Alfa Romeo’s ranging from the realistic 155 Sportwagon proposal, to the extreme dual V6 engined Issima roadster of 1996.

Ginetta G50 GT4 '09
Ginetta G50 GT4 '09.jpg
The Ginetta G50 is a specialist GT4 class-developed racing car, designed by Ginetta Cars. A road version of the car was planned, but did not enter wide-scale production; instead, the smaller Ginetta G40 was launched.

The G50 was developed to celebrate 50 year of production of Ginetta Cars. With base specifications penned by trained engineer Tomlinson, the car was developed in under six months.

Launched in 2008, the G50 was awarded Autosport National Car of the Year in its first year. With its own Ginetta GT Supercup one-make series, the G50 has also been undefeated GT4 class championship winner in every season of British GT Championship, and won the GT4 European Cup in 2009, beating Aston Martin, BMW and Porsche.

As a result, Ginetta Cars won "Small Business of the Year" from the Motorsport Industry Association in 2008, and in 2009 Tomlinson was nominated by the MIA for the "Outstanding Contribution to Motorsport" award.

Ginetta won the GT4 European Cup in 2009 and left main competitors like Aston Martin, BMW and Porsche behind.
A really nice car to have in a game.

Koenigsegg CCGT '07
Koenigsegg CCGT '07.jpg
The Koenisegg CCGT was created for the sole purpose of racing in FIA GT1 World Championship under the new rules-set it adopted for 2008 and is based on the production CC-model range. Said to have weighed in at just under 1,000 Kgs "Wet" (When the minimum weight was closer to 1,100), it was powered by 5.0 Liter, Normally-Aspirated derivative of the road-going CCX's Engine and was estimated to produce around 600 Horsepower (Which is FAR below the CCX's quoted power output).

However, just as the car was being finished and prepared to be sold to customers, the new regulations for the FIA GT1 World championship were changed so that a minimum of 350 examples of the actual model that was going to compete MUST be produced per year. As Koenigsegg's production volumes were much, MUCH less than this, the car never raced. Thankfully, the sole-surviving CCGT is still driven a few times per year for closed track sessions and at events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
