Bizzarrini GTS 4.1 V Ghepardo '06
Bizzarrini GTS 4.1 V Ghepardo '06.jpg
At the 2005 Geneva Motorshow another elusive name was added to the long list of brought back from the dead car manufacturers; Bizzarrini. As usual the 'revived' marque had no connection with the original with the exception of the name. Designed and constructed by a newly formed company called VGM Motors, a striking coupe was on display at Geneva to show the sports car manufacturer was back. To ensure all visitors were aware of the new company's inspiration an original Bizzarrini 5300 GT was displayed next to the 'Bizzarrini GTS 4.4 V' show car.

Although the new car dwarved the 5300 GT next to it, there were a number of design cues shared by the two. One of the original Bizzarrini's most typical feature was the location of the Chevrolet V8, which was so far back in the chassis that the coils had to be accessed through panels in the dashboard. True to the original, the new car's engine was in a similar location, but now of German origin. It was an Alpina tweaked BMW powerplant, which was mated to a six speed automated gear box. It was estimated to be capable of a 360 km/h top speed and sub four seconds 0-100 km/h times.

At the time the VGM Motors representitive indicated production could start early in 2006, but after the Geneva Show nothing was heard from the Italian company for well over a year. That was until the 2006 Villa d'Este concours d'elegance when a ferocious sounding Bizzarrini was driven through the Villa Erba park followed by a much more civilized sounding 5300 GT. It was hard to say if it was intentional, but the car seemed unable to manouvre without shredding up the grass. Obviously the year of silence was used to carry through some major modifications.

The Alpina engine was replaced by a slightly modified version of Mecachrome's all aluminium V8 engine. Enlarged to 4.1 litre the racing car derived engine was good for 550 hp at a stunning 10,000 rpm. All this power is transferred to the rear wheels through a six speed transaxle also cast from aluminium. It was said the engineers managed to keep the weight down to 1100 kg by the extensive use of aluminium and other exotic materials. This time round a timeframe for production was not mentioned, but development work seems ongoing.

In its current configuration, the 'Ghepardo' as it was referred to, is still considerably larger than the original, but at least its light weight and incredible engine will catch many enthusiasts' interest. It is seen here in the gardens of Villa Erba.

Noble M12 GTO 3R '00
Noble M12 GTO 3R '00.jpg
In 2000, the Noble M12 GTO threatened to turn the established supercar market on its head. With its mix of scorching performance, race-bred dynamics and immaculate build quality, the Noble could be bought for a fraction of the cost of most of its rivals, but gave away nothing to them on the road and track. The press raved about it and demand rapidly grew as buyers saw this British-designed car as a credible alternative to cars costing more than twice the price.

There are currently two models in the range: the M12 GTO-3 and the M12 GTO-3R. Both cars use the same engines and underpinnings, but there are significant differences in styling, refinement and transmissions. The M12 GTO-3 is the entry model in the range, with a list price of 47,950. As with the GTO-3R, it has a GRP composite body over a spaceframe chassis offering impressive levels of structural and torsional rigidity. Inside, the cabin is spacious enough to accommodate people over six-foot tall and has excellent ergonomics, adjustable seats and steering column, a fully trimmed safety roll cage and Alcantara trim as standard.

The 2968cc, twin-turbocharged V6 used in both Noble models is transversely mounted in front of the rear axle, directly behind the cabin. It features four valves per cylinder and double overhead cams to each bank of cylinders. The all-alloy engine is heavily modified from standard, with many bespoke components fitted during build. It produces 352 hp at 6200rpm, and is redlined at 7200rpm.

On the road, 350 ft-lb of torque produced between 3500 and 5000rpm makes the car immensely flexible and easy to drive. Even at 3000rpm, the engine is producing 80 per cent of its available torque. There is also very little lag from the twin Garret T25, water-cooled turbochargers, meaning a particularly linear response throughout the rev-range. The turbochargers run a maximum 0.7 bar of boost and are equipped with an air to air intercooler, centrally mounted at the rear of the car.

Nissan Prince R380 '65
Nissan Prince R380 '65.jpg
The Prince R380 was a racing car built in 1965 by Prince Motor Company to compete in the Japanese Grand Prix. Following the merger of Prince Motor Company and Nissan Motors in 1966.

In 1964, Prince had entered their new S54 Skyline GTs in the second Japanese Grand Prix, hoping to prove the performance potential of the car's new G-7 Straight-6. Although the cars performed well, they were defeated by a privately entered Porsche 904 GTS, leaving the Skylines to take second through sixth positions.

Realizing the superiority of the mid-engine layout used on the Porsche 904, Prince decided that a custom-built sports car would be needed to win the Japanese Grand Prix. The car was built from scratch, with an all new chassis being developed to house the engine in the middle. Aerodynamic bodywork was also used, with exposed buttresses over the rear engine cover.

For an engine, Prince would use the same G engine that the Skylines had used, but adapted it specifically for racing. The new unit, known as GR-8, would be a 1996 cc Straight-6 that produced 200 hp (150 kW). A Hewland 5-speed racing gearbox would be used in the transmission.

When Nissan took over the project, the bodywork of the R380 was completely redesigned. The rear buttresses were replaced with a flowing cockpit and engine cover, while the vents and ductwork of the car was further refined. Nissan was able to increase power in the GR8 engine to 220 hp.

So, the Skyline was actually part of the heritage of the Prince Motor Company within Datsun/Nissan. Interesting. :geek:
