Varley evR450 '11
Varley evR450 '11.jpg
If you’ve never heard of Varley, that’s because it’s not really a car company but rather an industrial group with a 125-year history that manufactures all kinds of vehicles ranging from airport tugs and hospital bed movers to urban search and rescue models and transportable aircraft landing systems. Varley has unveiled their evR450 - the first Australian electric supercar - at the 3rd annual Australian Electric Vehicle Conference.

The evR450 is powered by two locally sourced Ultramotive electric motors, each with 210 HP and 385 lb-ft of torque for a total output of 420 HP and 770 lb-ft of torque. This setup will sprint the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h and its range is 150 km or 300 km with the optional range-extension pack.

Panoz Abruzzi 'Spirit of Le Mans' '10
Panoz Abruzzi 'Spirit of Le Mans' '10.jpg
The Panoz Abruzzi is a grand tourer manufactured by Panoz Auto Development, ALMS founder Don Panoz has revealed the limited production car during the 24 Hours du Mans week in 2010.

Like the GTR-1, the Abruzzi is a front mid-engine design with an unspecified engine providing 600+ horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque mounted low and behind the front axle. Also following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the Abruzzi has its radiators mounted in the rear with cooling air being drawn from a duct in the roof and along the rear side windows.

Production was to be limited to 81 units and it was expected to be delivered from between 2011 and 2013, with a retail price of around £330,000. Each buyer would be given a driving course with the car on the Bugatti circuit at Le Mans and invited to the next race as a guest of Panoz and race organizer Automobile Club de l'Ouest where they would have the opportunity to drive their cars on the full circuit prior to the race.

As of July 2014 production of the Abruzzi was not confirmed, and is no longer featured on the company's website.

Audi Nanuk quattro '13
Audi Nanuk quattro '13.jpg
The Audi Nanuk quattro is a two-door crossover presented at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show together with the Sport quattro. Audi didn't offer any explanation for the name Nanuk but in Inuit mythology Nanuk ("Nanook") was the master of bears, who decided if the hunters deserved success in finding and hunting bears.

According to Audi, the concept "opens a new chapter in the Audi design language." Up front, it offers a flat version of Audi’s famous hexagonal Singleframe grille, dynamic daytime running lights with Audi’s new Matrix LED technology. Rounding out the odd front styling are large air inlets with three upright bars, giving the front end that signature Audi look. On the sides, you will notice the signature Audi sharp blister edge. When the doors pop open, they do so in an upward motion at an angle. Aligning with the recent rage in automotive styling, the exterior mirrors were replaced by wing-shaped cameras. On the backside, this unique concept gets a diffuser hiding the two round tailpipes pipes of the exhaust system, and a large window that offers a complete view of the TDI engine. To help keep the concept light, all of the components were made from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), and the concept wears an Extreme Red exterior paint.

The interior design was kept as simple as possible and is focused on the area around the steering wheel and the center tunnel, including the air suspension controls, navi controls, infotainment functions and the turn signals. This design gives the driver clean and easy access to all the the buttons and controls. The entire interior dons gray leather with aluminum accents on the instrument panel, and smatterings of CFRP throughout.

The Nanuk carries a 5.0-liter V-10 TDI engine that churns out over 400 kW (544 horsepower) and 1,000 Nm (738 pound-feet) of torque, which Audi mounted in a rear-midship position for extra stability. This powerful diesel mates to a seven-speed S tronic transmission that sends power to all four wheels through a specially designed quattro drivetrain. The drivetrain sprints the nanuk 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, and up to a top speed of 305 km/h.

That looks like an "R8 in off-road mode"...

No, it doesn't.

The Nanuk doesn't bear any design elements from the Mk1 R8, the front of the Nanuk looks similar to the Mk2 R8 but that wasn't around at the time this concept came to life, so technically the Mk2 R8 looks like a "street mode Nanuk." ;)

Nice find, Shino-kun. :)

The Nanuk looks much better than an R8 (both 1st and 2nd gen), to be honest. I wish it was put into production. :(

Citroën SM '70
Citroën SM '70.jpg
The Citroën SM is a high-performance coupé produced by the French manufacturer Citroën from 1970 to 1975. The SM was the most tangible result of Citroën's short lived ownership of Maserati. The car combined the pinnacle of Citroën hydraulics with a glorious Alfieri designed Maserati V6 engine all combined in an spaceship like body designed by Robert Opron.

Structurally the monocoque was a further designed version of the DS with two massive arms swooping forward from the cabin, holding the engine and the front suspension, this time with trailing arms rather than the leading ones as used in the DS. Almost anything possible was supported by hydraulics, the suspension, brakes and the steering but also the inner of the three front lights could be hydraulically turned and leveled.

The 2.7 litre 90 degree V6 in the first bunch of cars was fitted with three twin-choke Weber Carburetors, which proved to be troublesome. By mid-1972 the Webers were replaced by electronic Fuel Injection, an option which many owners also applied as a retrofit. Interestingly the engine bay was already so filled up that the control unit of the EFI had to put where the glove box used to be. The automatic equipped version of the car had a three litre version of the engine.

The power steering was self centering, requiring some getting used to, while also the directness of steering increased with speed, resulting in fingertip movements while cruising at speed on the motorway, where the fuel injected versions could reach more than 220 km/h, thanks to the slippery shape of the body. Like so many supercars built in the early seventies the car fell victim to the first oil crisis and production stopped in 1975.

John Dodd's The Beast '81
The Beast '81.jpg
In the 1960s, Paul Jameson put a Rolls-Royce Meteor (often mistakenly described as a Merlin) engine into a chassis he built himself. He did not get around to building a body, and sold the car to Epsom automatic transmission specialist John Dodd, who had supplied the automatic gearbox, Fibre Glass Repairs in Bromley, Kent fitted a fibreglass body and the car was named The Beast (mk1)

The Beast (mk1) was sponsored by British Petroleum and was extremely popular at car shows all over Europe. (The engine is alleged to have come from a Boulton Paul Balliol training aircraft, and drives a General Motors TH400 automatic transmission) It was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most powerful road car. Unfortunately the first Beast (mk1) caught fire on the way back from a car show in Stockholm after meeting the King, John Dodd tried frantically to extinguish the fire but failed and The Beast was reduced to a burnt wreck.

Undeterred, Dodd bought the car back to England, salvaged the chassis, refurbished the front suspension and fitted the IRS from a Jaguar XJ12. He sourced a replacement engine, again from Paul Jameson; this time the engine was a true Merlin, but again it's exact origin is a little murky. Dodd reckons it's a Mk 35, but there apparently never was a Mk 35; a possibility is that it's a 113/114 from a post-war De Havilland Mosquito TT Mk. 35.

The Beast has used two different fibreglass bodies during its life; the first (mk1) a saloon shape in dark red and the second current existing Beast (mk2) a 2-door estate car in beige. In both incarnations the car used Rolls-Royce grilles, badges, and hood ornaments, none of which were authorized by the company.

The Beast was brought to the attention of Rolls-Royce, who took Dodd to court after he refused to remove their radiator grille, badges, and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. Dodd lost the court battle and the Rolls-Royce trademarked features were removed and the grille was replaced with one bearing Dodd's "JD" initials. Dodd now lives in Spain and still owns the car, occasionally driving it to automotive shows.

a.d. Tramontana XTR-GT '15
a.d. Tramontana XTR-GT '15.jpg
The Tramontana is a Spanish single or twin seat sports car with styling inspired by open wheel racing cars. It is built by Advanced Design Tramontana in Palau de Santa Eulalia, Girona, Catalonia (Spain). It was launched as a concept at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, and subsequently modified for production.

Although it's road legal, the Tramontana is pitched as a track-focussed special. The top-level XTR-GT features a Mercedes-sourced twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V12 with up to 888 hp, power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential transmission, although the company says it plans to offer an eight-speed sequential option in the near future. Based around an Italian-made lightweight carbonfibre tub, the Tramontana XTR-GT have a dry weight of 1350kg. Each car is built to customer specifications, even down to paint specifications and interior layouts.

Tramontana officials admit the car’s styling divide opinions, but they say it’s designed to be driven to the track and back again. Its two-seat cabin features a tandem seating layout, with the passenger seated directly behind the driver. The leather and carbonfibre-trimmed cabin features a digital dashboard display.

Citroën Osée '01
Citroën Osée '01.jpg
The Osée is the first colaboration between Citroën & Pininfarina, it made its debut at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show. Pininfarina was inspired for this design by the French made Matra Bagheera from the early 1970s. One of the particularly unusual details about this car is the cockpit door, which bears resemblance to the cockpit doors of fighter aircraft. The conventional two doors, windscreen and the better part of the roof found on an average car, have been transformed into a single opening canopy. Another feature is the complete lack of driving mirrors, there is an LCD screen mounted behind the steering wheel, which shows the driver a rear view from inside the vehicle.

The Osée is powered by a Mid Mounted V6 producing 194 HP. The driver sits in a central driving position with a passenger to either side much like the McLaren f1. All 3 occupants exit & enter the car via 1 large door that spans the width of the vehicle & opens upwards.
